Guest
My platy had babies!!!!! I'm so-o-o excited. She had them last night & I watched her have the 1st 2x. I've only found two fry so far and shes still fat, I hope that means theres more to come. Spotted 1x early this morning but cant find it now. My tanks heavily planted so fingers crossed its found somewhere safe to hide. We'll check again after school.
Caryl
It's always exciting to see your first fry. Hopefully you will find more tonight. Not to worry if you don't though as you don't want to be over-run with them.
Guest
Just an update on my fry situation: The 2x fry I saw being born have disappeared, never to be seen again. (probably fish food ) Mother Platy still looks pregnant so I suspect the 2x she did have were delivered prematurely. The good news is, my other platy had 20+ babies this morning!!!! They were born in a breeder trap so are all safe & happy.
Janelle
Sorry to use someone else's thread but I'm having a sick day at home and was staring at my fish and noticed one of my platies that I bought from wilson wasn't as fat anymore and there was a baby something hiding in the plants, so I think it is a platy baby. I scooped the baby into a net breeder and put a java fern in there (I don't have moss) but when if I try to feed it he just ignores it, and then the food just wriggles through the bottom of the net. Can someone offer me any advice on keeping the little thing alive? Do you think I will be expecting more babies soon, and should I do anything about it or just let them become fish food...? I don't have another tank to put babies in at the moment. I'm already in the middle of trying to get rid of some fish! I really know NOTHING about platies. I bought the two females off wilson about 2-3 weeks ago and I do have a male in the tank now but he's only been there less than a week. Caryl
If you have no room for more fish then let it out of the net and "survival of the fittest". They will graze on fine food particles caught in the plants.
Guest
Hi Janelle What are you feeding it? I have 5 day old platy babies and I've been feeding them ground-up flake food (as fine as you can get it) and they're surviving just fine. Janelle
Caryl - I am fine with survival of the fittest for any other babies they drop, but I've already felt I've "rescued" this one, and it's just the one so I would like to try and raise it now it's there. Cam - I'm dropping microworms slowly through the net, so the baby has first chance before the other fish and I've ground up a very small amount of flake for it too. evilknieval69
All my baby platys (and ive probably had 100 or so) have been fed on flake and colourbits. They will peck away at food on the bottom if they are hungry
