fulloc
hey all, i need a little help from some seasoned discus'ers i had one 8cm blue/red turq and one 6cm pidgeon discus that got on well with one another and the plec and tetras i have in my tank. i recently purchased a 9cm turq and my new fish have not accepted it after over a week and a half. on saturday i got sick of them fighting (and causing my new fish to have not eaten since i got it) an went out and bought a 11cm rising sun. the fighting continued..... in the end i took out the smaller pidgeon and put him in my small tank for 'time out' but now my original turq still chases the new two. this is really annoying me as i do not want to lose my new fish, especially for the sake of my original smaller ones. i had hoped by getting large ones they would not fight but they sure do!! does anyone have any tips? im trying to raise up 2x baby (5cm) snakeskins asap to get a larger community going but i had thought 4 discus in one 1200x400x300 tank would be fine. thanks! dimebag
discus will always be fighting amongst themselves, and there will always one that gets picked on more than the rest. hopefully though the one thats picked on will pluck up a bit of courage and get out there and have a feed, and maybe even fight back once in a while. best just to try and get a bit of food to float past that one for now. sometimes takes up to a few weeks before things settle down after adding new fish. hope they settle down for u soon. markoshark
Try and get them to handfeed, and feed the smaller one with the other hand
Warren
Discus are best kept 10+ in a big tank. In the wild they school 100+. If you are going to keep less than 10 then it's best to get all the fish you want to keep together at once when they are small. You could try taking both the original fish out of the tank for a week or two to let the new ones settle in. Once they feel the tank is theirs, they'll stand up to the others better when they are put back in.
fulloc
wicked thanks for the advice. its startin 2 look like the big ones are calming down a little, think il keep the little one out for a couple weeks then 're-introduce it' and following that put the hopefully larger other two in. patience i guess.
