Fluffypants
I've already posted about this in the beginners topic but am hoping to get some reassurance from other betta owners. We bought a male (approx 5 months old) on Friday and all he is doing is bobbing around at the top in a corner. Doesn't seem at all interested in food and won't move when I put my finger near him. I keep thinking he has died and then he will move a little. He is the only occupant of this tank. Should I be worried or will he spark up a bit as he gets more used to the new surroundings?? Please help
evilknieval69
Just leave the poor fish alone and let him get used to his surrounding. Dont try to make him move and try to feed him all the time etc. If hes hungry he will eat. It will help him if the tank is not very brightly lit either. He will still be stressed so give him time HTH

Adrienne
if you're really worried try placing a mirror where he can see it or put one of your females in the tank inside a sealed container so the water doesn't mix. i'd leave him for another couple of days before worrying too much. what did he look like at the shop. my males in tanks by themselves lie around all day, in fact one of them lies on his side quite a bit. Fluffypants
I've posted a photo of him on the thread in the beginners forum. He looked fine in the shop although he looks slightly worse for wear now that the girls have had a go at him. I'm not holding out a great deal of hope for him. evilknieval69
I think the 'tube' you are talking about in the other thread is the Oviposter(sp?). The breeding tube. the females have one which they lay the eggs out of, and the males eject their sperm out of theirs. if the females pop theirs out you will see the shape difference between M & F. They usually pop them out when they want to breed, or for fighters in the presence of the opposite sex..... EDIT: Just had a look at the picture (i didnt realy look before, just read what you said) and noticed that its not the oviposter, its actually something coming out, maybe as adodge said a tumor or rupture of some sort. never seen anything like it. hope he gets better! Fluffypants
Sadly, he didn't survive the night. I have put him in the freezer and will take him back to the LFS to see if we can shed any light on what the problem could have been.
Adrienne
sorry to hear that - when you take him back see what the other males look like now.
Fluffypants
Thanks for the help. It's really disappointing to lose such a beautiful fish and not know why. I hope we have better (pun intended) luck next time and produce some gorgeous offspring.
Fluffypants
The post mortem verdict is stress induced prolapse of the bowel. I've learned a hard lesson and will be a lot more patient with the next male. He can 'bob' away in the back corner of the tank until he's big enough to deal with our stroppy females.
