smidey
i have just noticed that only the two clown loaches in my african setup have white spot badly. they have got it today. i was told that all fish have it but it comes out when they are stressed or run down. could this have come out due to adjusting to their new enviroment? wats the best way to get rid of it? one of my giraffes that i got last week had it but it was gone the following day & that was in the smaller tank. curent temp in tank is 27 deg. Caryl
Clown loaches get white spot very easily. Most suggest raising the tank temp to 28 - 29C (this speeds up the white spot cycle) and treat with white spot meds. Clown loaches and other 'scaleless' fish are sensitive to these meds and it is often recommended to dose half the suggested dosage if you have any of these fish. Remove any carbon from the filters before treatment too. The main thing is to work out what caused the white spot in the first place as 99% of the time it is stress - usually caused by poor, or incorrect, water conditions. smidey
i left them for three days & it didnt get better. i then got white spot meds, dosed each day & did a water change each day. after 10 days they are ok
herefishiefishie
From reading your post, the Venustus brought in the white spot to the tank. The other fish never showed signs of problems as they are healthy{slime coat} the whitespot can live in the gills for prolonged periods. Loaches being prone as mentioned above, come into a tank containing the parasite & brake out with disease. I believe that whitespot isn't always with fish. It has to short a cycle. It either lives in gills out of sight, or is introduced. Hopefully now that you have treated, no more dramas. Frenchy

Frenchy I accept your thinking but the giraffe had it in the two footer, not this main tank & no water or anything else except a plastic plant from the two footer went into the main tank (except the fish of corse). the white spot was introduced from the pet shop as their heater had failed & tank temp was 14 deg for a few days. it was at least 3 weeks before the loaches got it & i think it was different conditions that may have caused it. herefishiefishie
Like I said the fish would of carrying, thus transferred from one tank to another when moving fish, or via plastic plant, or from the net used from catching fish in different tanks. Whitespot is very easy to transfer. I have linked a whitespot article from Florida Uni somewhere on this site. It explains the life cycle, the ease of transfer from tank to tank, fish transfer, nets etc. The ability to live in gills only, if body is healthy etc. Yep fish came from cold tank that is no good, you would think the shock of temp change would make them break out that day or the next, not 3 weeks later too. Cricketman
the easiest way that i got rid f white spot was to add a slight amount of salt along the front of the tank, cant memmy y it was along da front, but yer, it worked... just keep changing the water
