smidey
really? why wodn't mine have coloured yet? here's a pic of mine
Afrikan
Did you definately purchase a male/female pair? I can see a hint of darkish large anal spots on the anal fin of the fish on the left (however, hard to tell on angle), yet... the females can show a hint of anal spots too. The larger fish on the rights anal fin looks clean (showing on this screen anyway)... Your male should be showing some signs of colour, yet sometimes it comes down to environment and often speed up with developing colour when they have a reason to, ie dominance etc.
malawi_man
in aulonocara species the males have white lines along the dorsal fin. You may have 2 females. Maybe give venting a go - http://www.malawimayhem.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2011
ryanjury
Looks like 2 females to me.. should expect to see some sort of colour even if it is just a hint by 5cm's.. I wouldn't worry if you have 2 females though its a beter ratio now you just have to convince one of the many on here who have a heap of spare males to sell you one
Jasmine
So is it the same with Chilumbas? I've got two quite large ones (and a number of smaller ones) but they haven't coloured up yet. I think there's faint colouring under the right light though.
malawi_man
females can also have faint male colouring on the right angle. Venting them is the only way.
ryanjury
Dont get me started on chilumba's  I brought a pair before I left auckland and kept in touch with the breeder who assured me that he would sort it out if they were 2 males... Sure enough they turn out to be 2 males and when I contact him to sort it out no reply to emails he black lists me on trademe.. Hes content on making sure hes the only one with females so pretty much guaranteed he deliberately sells males, so that he can be the only one breeding and selling them and keep selling them for heaps on trade me, I did think I had 2 males to begin with but he assured me they were a pair and he would fix it if not and I trusted him because I thought we got on really well with him and didn't think he would turn around and shaft me. lol thats my rant out of the way I hope you get a female or 2 jasmine id love to get a hold of some babies or a female at some stage! Afrikan
Are you sure you are done ryan  Hmm that would have been a right royal pain in the behind :-? You could go and edit the feedback you left MUAHAHAHAHAHA! That might change his mind and stick to his word...
ryanjury
LOL Yeah as you can tell its a bit of a sore point.. Im pretty generous and trusting gave them a heap of fish and really thought we were friends so it sucks when you get let down! GRRRR Unfortunately we didn't buy them off trademe I knew he had them so went over to get them off him.. If anyone has a spare female let me know lol

Really? I brought five Chilumbas from the same person. A mixture of sizes, as they were unsexable due to their size. I do believe I have a couple of males and females. I also brought some Maleris from him first. We got on quite well, he seemed nice enough! He let me reserve the Chilumbas till I got paid, as he said he didn't mind as long as they got a good home. I guess he can't really block me as I live just down the road from him! Hehe.
ryanjury
Yeah I got maleri and red shoulders and fryeri off him.. I had no reason to believe he would do that always been nice always talking to him on msn etc been around to his house a fair few times (we used to live down the road too) and now im outta Auckland guess its easy for him to ignore me! Myself and my wife actually considered them friends until all of this.. Anyway I hope you've got females im really keen for a female or some babies keep in touch let me know maybe we can sort something out for some dragons bloods down the line
Jasmine
Yeah definitely will! That's why I was interested in sexing, I got two bigger ones who I think are males (the largest has bright egg spots) but was just wondering if he'd colour up. The other three I think are too small to tell.
ryanjury
Sweet well good luck... LOL hope the 3 smaller ones are all female and you can spare me one Keep in touch! And Smidey sorry to hijack your thread, good luck with venting your fish, if you have fully coloured fryeri in the tank you may have a male that is sub dominant.. Afrikan
It can often be the case that the other fryeri won't colour up smidey due to the fact you have a dominant male fully coloured. I have two males in a display tank that are both coloured up, but one is very bright, the other not so bright.. then there are 2 other males that haven't coloured at all, just show a hint of blue. Jasmine
Ah, so could that be why my bigger males don't seem to be colouring? I think I do see a blue dullness to them...But they're certainly not the dominant fish in the tank.
ryanjury
I had 2 male chilumba's in the tank and they got to about 7-8cm's and they were both defiantly males they didn't fight either, one had heaps of colour the other not so much but you could definitely tell it was 2 males But yes alot of fish do hide coloration if theres a bigger bossier fish in the tank
Jasmine
Awesome, I don't know how big they are, but don't think they're quite at the 7-8cm mark, maybe more about 5cm.

Jasmine
Actually looking closer at my Chilumbas, I actually think my biggest one is a female...no hint of egg spot whatsoever. But she looks too proud to be female. But that could be why it hasn't coloured up yet. I think my second biggest is a male though as its got the egg spots. malawi_man
females quite often have eggs spots too in a number of species.
Jasmine
Yeah, but my biggest definitely doesn't. I hope I don't end up will all females anyway!
