HaNs
My Dad has asked me to find out about a large Native fish tanks set up for the Trout Center in Turangi. Not sure on the exact size yet....but its going to be a display tank and will be larger than your average tank What to make the tank out of? Does Acrylic scratch easily? Who builds them? Lighting requirements? Natural light? Filtration? Needed? Use water flow from streams and rivers into tank? Any other comments would be helpful Ill get pics if they get one made! markoshark
Have a look in DIY projects. Tank Man (I think) made a tank for the Wellington airport, perhaps contact him? Filtration directly from stream& back into tank would solve problems of cooling the water, water flow, and filtration. Just have to be carefull getting the water out again. Overflow filter? I would use low level aquarium lighting to show off the fishes colours. And how big? 8foot + i hope!
bdspider
Try ringing around aquariums with native displays for their advice, eg Southern Encounter in Chch has a range of native fish.
HaNs
Cheers for that. How big will depend on budget! Should be well over 8ft hopefully Oversized Comments and snide remarks removed. What part of this are we not to understand. If you are BUILDING something... then it is a DIY project. Members wanting info on Tanks and the building of are not going to look in other sections... but if you can't see that the move was for YOUR benefit.. then complain to the Admins. Post like that again Hans and your post will be locked or removed. Read the guidelines... especially the bit about moving posts. You posted in the FW section. Mod Bill. Ianab
Here are a couple of articles on building oversize tanks. They are made of plywood, lined with fibreglass and a large glass or perspex front window inserted. http://members.shaw.ca/wmastop/bigtank/Startb~1.htm http://www.malawicichlidhomepage.com/aquainfo/tang_1500.html I'm guessing that at a large fish centre they have large amounts of stream water available. It may be simpler to just cycle fresh stream water through the tank, no filtering problems, you are just diverting part of the stream though another pool.
