IOU1
Hi guys, I hire a tank out to my dads office and he has told me that he wants reasonable sized fish he can see :-? I am now wondering what to put in that is reasonable in price and lively so they don't hide when someone comes in, the tank is 90L and I will be keeping two pearl gouramis in there. What are your recommendations for lively and reasonably sized cheapish fish compatible with gouramis (preferably with some colour) Love the red tiger barbs and some websites said they do go with gouramis but I just can't see it. What do you guys think?? Thanks for your help
Caryl
Without looking up water requirements (so not sure if they are compatible with gouramis) I would suggest various rainbows.
smidey
i have angels with my gaurami, they mix fine when not spawning.
Ianab
Tiger barbs are probably OK, but you will want at least 6 (or more) otherwise they usually start hassling the other fish. A school of them are usually pretty active and look good. What about some adult kribensis or golden barbs? I would also drop in a little bristlenose pleco, you will probably never see it, but it will do a great job cleaning algae off the glass. Good for a display tank, clean glass with less work for you Cheers Ian
smidey
& chuck in three or 4 clown loaches, they are always interesting to watch
Lady-Lene
Yep - Def some clown loaches. I have a tiger barb that is great friends with 2 honey, 1 pearl and 1 cobalt gouramis. Not sure how a bunch of them would go though.
IOU1
Thanks for the help guys, water parameters are pretty neutral, temp 26 degrees (could change this). I love the tiger barbs as they come to you when you go by the tank instead of swimming and hiding. Have a bristlenose but will definately be getting more. A school of tiger barbs is a good thing - they chase each other round the tank and leave the other fish alone. One by itself will chase whatever else it can find to chase. I have been wondering if I should get couple more to keep mine company coz he has a bit of an identity crisis and thinks he is a clown loach. He follows them everywhere and even lays on his side occasionally! Funny wee guy and friendly. Sorry for hijacking your thread IOU1
smidey
i also have a pair of schwatrz corys, they are great to watch cruising around together
michael.qian
Don't clown loaches need a very big tank? Much much bigger than 90L But than again on some website it says it only needs a minimum of 20 galleons, on other sites it says 90 galleons. Would love to know which is correct, I have a 40 galleon and would love to have some clown loach is the size permits.
michael.qian
Just did the research again, definitely seems they need a very big tank, some say at least a 6 foot.
smidey
Just did the research again, definitely seems they need a very big tank, some say at least a 6 foot. maybe when they are fully grown after 10-15 years they will need a 6 footer. they grow very slowly. mine are about 3inches & have plenty of room in their 3 footer
michael.qian
I have a 2.5 foot tank that's 40cm wide, would really love to have 3 or 4 and some corys, I woud really hate to see them not having enough space to exercise in. lol let's start a vote of yes or no... Do clown loaches, at their juvenile size and in a group of 4 or 5, need a really big tank?
IOU1
 Talk about hijacking my thread... Nah, I've got what I need, ladylene you and michael.qian can take over if you like I am planning on getting clownloaches for my tank I have at home, its five foot... For the 90L i'll stick to the gourmais and go and decide on the other fish everyone mentioned here. I do think clown loaches are awesome, but not suitable for the small tank in the long run, appreciate the thought though Will definately be getting some!!! Ianab
Do clown loaches, at their juvenile size and in a group of 4 or 5, need a really big tank? No... small clown loaches will be OK in a smallish tank... for a while. They dont grow very quickly, but eventually they will outgrow it. As long as you have a plan to re-house them a couple of years down the track it's not a problem. Cheers Ian
Lady-Lene
If I'd read your post properly I'd have seen the tank was a bit small for clown loaches. They like to be in groups. I'm kinda hung up on clown loaches and gouramis right now. My favs. I'd definitely go with some bottom dwellers as suggested. I've got lots of corydoras but I'd go with sumptin that cleans better like catfish or small pleco. Hey what about a redtailed shark. They are super cool ! markoshark
I'd agree with the rainbow fish, clowns can get a little bit hidey at times
Zev
Blue Rams? Ours are as nosey as, when you go near the tank they come right up to the glass to see what you are going to feed them! You can wipe the glass and they don't shy away, and when you vacuum the tank they hang around the bottom of the vac and chase the stuff going up the tube!
