Faran
If you don't know what hydra are, they're a small green thing that grows on just about anything. Resembling a VERY skinny green cousin of a sea anemone they're a member of the jellyfish family. Pics can be found here on Google. Well to the point, doing some research tonight I read that these particularly pestful little blighters are readily eaten by Honey Gouramis, Colisa Chuna. I just wanted to find out if anyone here has tried this or noted it happening in their aquariums? As far as I knew there wasn't a cure for hydra, and I've only seen it once in a tank, which was quickly sterilized.
Insect Direct
I used honey gouramis (after someone on here sugested them) which seemed sucessfull at the time, but then i just found if i fed too much live food then the hydra would suddenly be thriving again so another time used a big dose of 40+% formalin which killed everything (planaria, hydra, snails) even duckweed
Ianab
I suspect they may eat them, and control the population. But like most biological controls they probably wont eliminate every last one. Its like having a pleco to control algae.. it only works when the pleco is there Cheers Ian
alanmin4304
6mls of 35% formaldehyde/100litres will kill hydra and should be OK with plants and fish. 12mls will kill planaria (and fish and some plants)
fishy_t
You can kill hydra with a 9v battery (the square ones). Just give each terminal a wire and put them both into the tank - fish and plants are fine, hydra die (according to PFK a few years back!)
