alanmin4304
Are they coated with brown algae?
sub.z
I presume there cold water plants as they were under the cold water fish They are coated in algae but only older bits, the fresh growth is fine It looks almost like i could wipe it off but was just wondering the cause
Caryl
If it is a new tank then that brown algae is common and will disappear as the tank matures. Wipe off the brown if you want.
jn
Caryl, I'm sure this has been asked a zillion times but... What's the average time it takes for a tank to mature? Are we talking 6 months or so? (I'm getting impatient with my brown algae. It really slows down the plant growth especially when the lighting is marginal to begin with! Grrr!) Caryl
Do not mistake "mature" for "cycled". They are two different things. Usually a tank is considered mature after 6 months. A lot depends on how heavily planted and/or stocked the tank is as well.
jn
Yep. Definitely understood cycled was not the same as mature I'm taking mature to mean well and truly settled into a happy/balanced little ecosystem. 6 months sounds good though... thanks. wilson
do more plants make it less time to mature
alanmin4304
Because most plants you buy have been grown emersed they go through a rest period while converting to submersed growth and this is ideal conditions for algae to take hold. You will be able to keep the new growth and throw out the old (with the algae) when established.
sub.z
Sweet, that tank with the brown leaves is fairly new. Probabl less than 6 months so with any luck it should come right soon Does it matter what size ank it is to know how long it will take to mature?
