testing for water hardness....

GH - General Hardness (Calcium etc)

KH - Carbonate Hardness (Alkalinity/pH Buffer)

I'd get a GH/KH kit, or go to your local fish store, most of the bigger ones will do the test for free or a small fee. You'll have to ask if they can do KH and GH though, I think some just test Ammonia,Nitrite,Nitrate, and pH.

Wouldnt the water be slightly different in reference to exactly where you are

I know that people here on the Gold Coast using the same water supply dont have the same readings everywhere

I found depending on the age of the house and where they lived affetced some of these readings

The engineers usually have a good idea where the water is from and therefore how it is likely to be. The age of a dwelling is not likely to affect the water hardness. For instance the water in Christchurch is from many different artesian wells from the second or third artesian strata and is about 45 ppm. There are four artesian strata.
