Milet
Can someone please tell me if they know what the name of this plant is and how big it gets? Its about 35cm now and grows really quickly and the main stem is getting very thick.
HummingBird
That's Hygrophila lacustris (Blue Hygro). It's a stem plant so it'll just keep growing, like all of them do. Same rules apply to trimming them as with most stemmed plants - just cut off the top and replant it in the gravel, the bottom piece will sprout a new tip and the top piece will sprout new roots. And bingo you've just doubled your number of plants. Nostalgic trivia: My first post on FNZAS was asking what this plant was too.
Milet
Lol. Thanks Eric. I originally only had two of this plant, but kept triming them once they outgrew my 60L tank and chucked a few trimmings into this tank and now they are huge. So if i put them into a bigger tank, they'll definatly keep growing?
HummingBird
Yeap - there's not much that can stop them in my experience. I've still got descendants of my original plants from two and a bit years ago.
Caryl
I think if you pinch the tops out too they will branch out more and become more bushy.
Milet
Thanks! Oh and, are they strictly tropical or would they survive in my pond?
HummingBird
I've kept them in coldwater indoor tanks before and they've been fine. Dunno about a pond - you might as well try though.
alanmin4304
I always thought blue hygropgila was stricta.
HummingBird
Strica's Giant Hygro, I think. I dunno, there seems to be a lot of confusion about the common names of things. The latins are right, in any case.
HummingBird
According to the plant survey: Hygrophila lacustris = Blue Hygro Stricta = "Temple Plant" or "Cherry leaf"
alanmin4304
To be honest I have never heard of lacustris. Where did you get it from?

SilverBlade86
Heh, I was lucky to stumble into this thread before I made a new one. I have the same plants and they wont stop growing! They are now past the water level and touching the top of the tank. Will trim them and let them grow more, I like these plants.
