Alan
That would weigh in at about 130lbs
Bluetom
if it's 2x1x1 should be ok, had mine on a pine shelving unit for a while. Will weight 50-70kg depending on rocks etc.

Bluetom
I would say that would be fine, you may want to put a sheet of wood - pine or mdf etc- ontop to increase the stiffness a bit. Wouldn't need to be attached.
bulldogod
cool, thanks for the help
richms
I dunno, the top is inside the sides, and if its also inside the back then it will be putting sheer stresses on the staples or whatever its held together with. Since the central divider is stapled in place, its fair to assume the whole thing will be done like that. The front center support will be fine since its under the tabletop. Warren
Would be fine if it has been glued as well as stapled. If it's not glued then I agree, it might be risky. You could try sitting on the shelf and giving it a good shake. If it doesn't creak or wobble then it should be fine.

alanmin4304
The old standard 24 x 12 tank was a cracker. Held 12 gallons, every inch of water was a gallon and the water weighed 120lbs (makes you feel old don't it)
Ianab
Check how the back is attached to the unit, thats the main bracing in that sort of construction. If it was to fail it would be because the back panel tore loose and let the whole thing fold up. If it's only held in place by a few staple you could reinforce it with a dozen or so wood screws. If it's really flimsy like cardboard then a sheet of plywood would help. If it's loose, pull it right off and screw/glue it back securely. Then give it the sit on and wiggle test, the tank, water and gravel will weigh around the same as a normal adult. If you dont feel safe sitting on it, dont put a tank on it! As long as it's not real dodgy construction then it should be fine with a 2ft tank. Cheers Ian
SpidersWeb
If you can sit on it, it'll hold your tank fine.
becc4
Why not put a few longish screws through the back of the unit into the shelf? Would that help make it a little more secure?
bulldogod
I will put some screws in and maybe some 2x2 under it just to be sure. Will try the sitting on it test, lol, never thought of that, if it holds me, itll hold the tank. Cheers
