cleadus1
wel im building a new nano... the tank is about 30L ish, iv had exactly the same tank set up for a lil while but not with much in it as i have always thought about improving it and wel i had anothr tank sitting around so thought i would do something with it, this tank is going to use a undergound filter with just under 1/3 of the tank acting as the filter crushed shell as bottom layer and coral sand on top, it is what is in my other tank and works fine. the improvements that i will make on this tank are that i am going to run pumps and heater inside a peice of pvc pipe that will run up the center of the tank so everything is hidden and will have a 360 degree view of tank, i will cover the pvc in live rock to create a sort of pillar in the center, the light tht comes with the tank is a 6w fluro but i am upgraing that to a 18w marine light and am going to make a wood base to hide underground filter and material on bottom. any coments or ideas would be greatly appreciated. i will post pics soon. wasp
Cleadus1 do you mean undergravel filter? If so, it will not deal with nitrate, as it stays too highly oxygenated. Although in such a small tank I guess you could water change the nitrate away without too much difficulty. It could be a very pretty little tank, what are you planning to keep in it? cleadus1
opps haha yip. yea its easy enugh to change water. just some soft corals and a coupple of clowns. wot soft corals do you think would do best in a tank like this?
wasp
I'd go some mushrooms, and zooanthids, as they are low light, hardy, and easy care, plus they can be very attractive. Here are some examples from my tank
cleadus1
u dont hav any small ones i could buy off you when its fully set up do u?
wasp
I could spare you a small number, if you drop me a pm at the time. Have a look around your area first though, there are quite a few established reefers who might be able to help out.
cleadus1
wel iv finished the wood base just got to oil it now and have cut out the old filter which was a overflow thing on the top. but now iv got a lil problem, i want to get my 2 little powerheads and 55w heater into the something in the center of the tank that i can cover in LR and i want to be able to remove the powerheads and heater 2 service, i was thinking about the pvc pipe in the pic (having the bottom under the undergravel filter and the top caped off) but hav discovered its a tad too small and dont know how the pump outlets will line up with holes/outlets in the pipe, does anyone have any ideas? cleadus1
well its all coming together now, the pumps and heater are inside a rectangle tube that runs up one side of the tank (was too big to put in the center) now what i want to do is cover the perspex tube with live rock but need to stick the rock together somehow... would silicon stick two wet rocks together??. im not going to glue it to perspex because will make it easyer to remove if i ever need to, so im going to stack the rocks and glue them together infront of the tube. (would be good to if it could cure underwater)
wasp
Silicone is not such a good idea. I use a product from Placemakers called Sika waterstop powder, I got it for making frag plugs cos it sets in a minute or so. I've also used it to stick the odd rock together & it's excellent, and strong, but you have to work FAST. Placemakers have other cementy type products, one that I can't remember the name sets in around 20 minutes & would probably be ideal. Other thing to be aware of is that using cement in the tank may raise alkalinity & pH of the water for the first few weeks. You should test the water for this & don't add living organisms till parameters are OK.
JDM
i have the cement that HFF sells, its excellent to used and sets as strong as the coral rock, i have used it on wet rocks and it can be tricky but will do the job, send me a pm and i courier some your way if your keen. this post was edited by a mod and then vandalised by that same mod! wasp
Not going to stick to wet rocks very well.
cleadus1
if i put coral rock in the tank do i need 2 wait for it to cycle before i can put livestock in? my sand has cured and stuff but i was thinking in a smal tank would the rock curing in the tank upset the levels?
