Blue Danios

We have just added some blue danios to our tank but I haven't been able to find much info on them on the web. Are they a hybrid of zebra and pearl danio as I have found them called both danio kerri and danio rerio as scientific name? Ours have long fins and one has stripes on the anal fins which makes me think they are from zebra danios. I've tried to take a photo of one but they are so damn active. Can anyone enlighten me? :hail: Thanks

I got 4 of these about 4 weeks ago from critter kingdom and now have a tank full of 2 week old fry.

Were sold as "blue danios" but seem to be more known as longfin blue danios. When i saw them in the tank at the store they looked really mottled and i thought they were a standard zebra x golden zebra mutation. they were really pale gold around the head darkening back to the silvery blue. and have less stripes than a zebra.

Very very active wee things. "spawn, spawn spawn spawn FOOD! spawn spawn spawn......"

I would describe them as "washed out zebras"

This is a photo of one of my fish. Why did it have to take 20 shots to get this? everything else was a blur!

Finally managed to get a photo of the fish. I've noticed that all of their tails are quite tatty. They spend a lot of time chasing each other around the tank and I wonder if they are nipping each other. We haven't seen any fry or noticed any getting fatter. After reading Loopy's "spawn, spawn, spawn" comment I was expecting to see some offspring. How do you sex them?

I had mine in a breeding tank to themselves and they were spawning like mad.

The fry won't have a chance in a community tank as the other fish will probably eat the eggs and fry.

THe behaviour you are observing of them chasing each other is most likely spawning. The males can be a little nippy when spawning but it is all just passionate love biting

To sex the females are fatter than the males and the best time to compare them is before feeding time. Males often are more golden than the females which are very silvery.

The other thing i have noticed is that they do not breed true. They fry i have grown out from my blue danios are just ordinary zebra danios with good long fins. I am going to try spawning a couple of the fry together to see what i get soon

I think that you will find that they are a fairly poor result of mankinds fiddling with something that was perfectly ok just to get some deformation(long fins) and a colour variation that hasn't quite cut it.

Zebra danio. IMO

Some "Blue Danio" came into where my hubby works and in all honesty they didn't look anything startling at all, they do look like a danio that has been tampered with and I definately wouldn't have classed them as blue. Look like an attempt at Blue but never cut it

Thanks Loopy, we might stick them in our new tank when it's finished cycling and see what develops. Definately a few wider bodies amongst the mix, so I'll assume these are female.

I consider our danios to be very pretty and although they usually appear silver, when the morning sun hits them, they have the most beautiful blue sheen. It's all about personal preference :)
