bulldogod
Air pump for cichlids?? I was told today that I needed a air pump in my tank of souyh african cichlids as they need the surface water to be moving?? Is this correct? I have had advice from pet shops before and it has not been correct.
smidey
an air pump agetates the water surface which is what creates the oxygen in the water. the air out of the pump isn't in the water long enough to make much difference. as far as i'm aware all fish need oxygen in the water. I personally don't have an air pump as one of the filters I have running in my tank is a wet dry system which oxygenates the water.
herefishiefishie
What type of filter do have currently in the tank? As above most fish need oxygen, but you should be able to set up your existing filters so the top of the water surface is broken. sharn
I have my inlets as close to the bottom as i can safely (one tank has sand and that doesnt go well with impellors) and the outlets as close to the top, or facing the glass pointed slightly upwards (if its a spray bar) as possible so i get good turnover and good surface movement you dont NEED an airstone most of the time, and if you did even after altering the outlet of your filters chances are its too small for your tank.
