Breeding simaese fighting fish

Hi,

I am currently raising siamese fighting fish fry. I have had a community tank for a few years but this is the first time I have bred any fish so I'm very new to it. The fry are 14 days old and at a rough guess there are around 100 of the little guys. I feed them microworms, some liquid fry food and occasionally egg yolk. I notice that the fry seem to change their feeding habits almost daily. For example, two days ago all the fry stayed at the bottom and ate off the bottom of the tank. Today they are all at the surface of the tank and eating off the leaves of the plants. Is this usual? Are the foods I'm giving them ok?

IF they're lived 14days then your obviously doing something right..

I think you can have heavy losses when they start to develop further and remember something about sealing tanks to ensure they only breath warm air but its been about 10 years since I bred them and I never managed to raise them in any substantial number which i didn't mind cuz I didn't have space for all the males..

Thanks. :)

I have noticed a few dead fry in the bottom of the tank over the past few days. And already I can see that some fry are growing faster than others. Hopefully lots will survive. I have the top of the tank sealed with a fitted glass lid so hopefully the air in the tank will stay warm.

I used to breed a lot of them but in a heated fish house so didn't have the problem with the air temperature, someone else should be able to advise on that. The tricky part is feeding them enough to try and get more even growth without overfeeding and polluting the water (very easy with egg yolk). Green water won't pollute and keep it going with microworm and brine shrimp. I used to feed to excess and remove the excess uneaten food before it has time to rot and cause problems. A few snails will assist with that also. As soon as you can seperate them out for size or you will nd up with two very fat ugly fighters.

Hi, I breed fighters up here in Auckland - they are a bit young to be hanging at the top of the tank as their labrynths won't have developed fully yet. If you can you are best to put in an air line or something that will stir up the top of the water and encourage them to stay down for another week or so. You're doing well if you have quite a few through to two weeks and most losses will occur over the next 10-14 days as they start to surface to breath air. You will need to keep the air above the tank as warm as possible. Hope this helps. Good luck
