shane0o7
hi i am from australia and am just wanting to know what the availability of frontosa over there? and also zebra catfish (Hypancistrus zebra) http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/lo ... /168_f.php
Rob
Frontosas seem to be available in the South Island - haven't seen many here in the North Island. Zebra plecos seem pretty scarce at the moment (due to high prices making it unattractive to import them).
Caryl
Hi Shane. I'm curious, why do you want to know?
Warren
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they on the NZ baned import list. I think you can keep them, just not import them.
Rob
The Frontosas aren't on the allowed list to my knowledge - there is no banned list anymore only the allowed list. There are still numerous things that come in even though they're not on the allowed list - it's my personal suspicion that young frontosas get bought in as similar appearing fish (at least when they're young)that are allowed such as Neolamprologus tretocephalus possibly. herefishiefishie
So if I came over on holiday what can I bring in, Hey Shaneo you moving to NZ???? or Looking for new stock??? Frenchy ps; Shaneo is a legend in these parts for his Fronnies!!!
Warren
You can bring anything on the allowed list. You need an import permit from MAF and you need to be met at NZ Customs by a registered quarantine site officer who will take your fish for a 6 week quarantine period. There will be a minimum quarantine cost of approx $700.00 NZD. I can't remember the cost of the permit. I looked at importing fish a few years ago. Unless you plan to bring in thousands of fish the cost is very high per fish. The quoted cost of $700 at the time was for 50 young adult Discus. Alan
Dunno if they'd let you in Frenchie. But if you did you need good leak-proof bags, and a steelie face, and a hidden compartment, make that compartments, and - - , and - - , and a bit of luck.. But like Warren says, "tings are tuff on da border" But I hear Aussies try any thing Even cricket and rugby. Good profit on zebbies too if you can pick them up here, and get them back in. shane0o7
Caryl why i want to know is it seems like the customs inspectors over there are pretty slack when it comes to importing fish and knowing what they are like Rob said about trets!(Neolamprologus tretocephalus ) being mistaken for fronnies! maybe they could mistake ziare blue fronnies for trets! who knows! just wanted to find out weather they were allowed over there! p.s hey frenchy nah mate not moving over there just sussing some objectives out! damn its hot over here in aussie! Interfecus
I just checked the MAF allowed list (http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/impo ... ic.all.htm) and you're right, they're definitely not allowed.
Interfecus
I'd never rely on customs services being slack: if you try to import an illegal fish and they find out then all of the fish will be destroyed and you can be sent to jail or fined substantial amounts. David R
Sorry for dragging an old thread up, but I'd really like a few fronts for the tanganyikan tank I'm planning. There are obviously some in NZ (see here and here for example), but is there anyone breeding them, or anywhere I'd be able to get some small ones?? Any info on their availability would be appreciated.
