penguinleo
I have some red and tiger lotus but the leaves seems to continually rot away. So I cut all but one of the leaves and stalks down. New leaves grew but they still rot and die. The leaves get 1 or 2 roundish holes in them. The hole isn't completely punctured but it is like a greenish brown (colour of dead leaves) then the hole gets larger and larger until the leaf dies and turns into mush. It is odd because my lotus are the only types of plants that seem to suffer from this kind of problem. Any symptoms and or reasons on why this may be happening? Luke*
Do you feed any ferts? Probably lacking in some element
alanmin4304
I have only had mine for a while but I think because they are water lillies they probably feed heavily through the roots. I grew the plain ones years ago and had a pretty rich strata for media. Mine are doing OK at present in only medium light but I very rarely clean the gravel so they will be getting good nutrient levels.
Luke*
I add fertiliser balls care of HandS to mine. You're right they're predominantly root feeders
penguinleo
I give them some liquid ferts. such as Flourish, Flourish iron, potassium and there is JBL aqua basis fert underneath the substrate. Do you still think they will need root tabs/balls?
alanmin4304
That should be enough fertilizer.
penguinleo
Hmm..so any ideas?
Luke*
How many watts are you running? Mine do this a bit even under 400w MH
penguinleo
Running 156 watts in a 180-200L tank.
Luke*
That's good lighting. Maybe they need some other trace element.
alanmin4304
They are water lillies and they normally have floating leaves. We try to keep the leaves submersed so we are not doing them any favours.
penguinleo
:-? The leaves die off by melting. They turn into a pale green colour.
alanmin4304
I have one doing that at the moment. So long as it is producing more leaves than it is shedding I wouldn't worry about it. Just remove the dead leaves to reduce the nutrient load
michael.qian
It used to grow quite well new leaves come up quite frequently but now leaves are all leaving, only have 4 leaves remaining right now and they look like they are about to pack their bags and go any second, no new leaves are coming out. I use JBL Ball fertilisers. What's wrong? All my other plant are doing well.
