cat
Well found out today just what a filter smells like that hasnt been turned on for a while! :-? I thought hubby had cleaned it out and he thought I had. Turned out niether of us had and it has been sitting for over a month. Phew what a smell! I would like to use this filter again if there is anything on this earth that can remove the smell. I will throw out (of course) all the filter media but what is the best stuff to clean the filter baskets and cannister with? I have sat this filter right in the far corner of our backyard and I can still smell it from the back door!  Neighbours will wonder what has died at the fence. Caryl
Soak it in a bleach solution then rinse it extremely well.
Ira
What I did with mine in the same situation was(After giving everything in the filter a good wash) filled a sink up, got the filter running with the hoses in the sink and dumped a cup or so of janola. Ran it like that for about an hour, drained the sink, poured all the water out of filter and replaced it with fresh, ran it for about another hour then poured out the water and let the filter sit open for a while to let it dry and let anything left evaporate. cat
Cheers for that information. If I can hold my breath long enough to go get it I will try that. Not sure I want to have it in the house but then again the smell of Janola has to be far better than the smell of the filter.
Pies
I used bleech for the same reason. 15% soultion. I set the filter up, with the soultion in a bucket and let it 'rinse' it self. Had to chance the soultion 3 times until it smelt fine. Then I let it rinse itself the same way for a few days before putting it back into the system. Good luck.
