CMG
What is the best way to increase the water hardness in an african tank. We have just realised the water hardness is way to low in our tank so have added limestone rocks. Will these be sufficient, or what else could we use. Cheers
jasonhunt
Hey there what sort of subsrate do you have? for africans something like argonite or coral sand is best and looks really good to. I use coral sand now after having the same problems when I had stones as substrate.
CMG
We just have some black small pebbles and then the limestone rocks. I have been thinkin about getting coral sand. Is it hard to keep clean though?
Afrikan
We use Aragonite (marble chip) as a substrate and Limestone rocks in our Malawi Tank.. (also use Aragonite with our Tanganyikans)... This helps buffer the water... there are also various products on the market that some people choose to buy
jasonhunt
Its not that hard to keep clean I do regular cleans about once a month just with a regular syphon and I find that does the job nicely.
herefishiefishie
Substract as mentioned above is good. If you have a canister filter, having a small bag of crushed coral in the filter is great. Here is a simple recipe to use when doing water changes, http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/buffer_recipe.php NB; Always remember.... always do a water change when raising the ph of your water.
