Rumour has it that they are pretty bad in general for everything can even induce allergic reactions in people when handled..

I stay away from them mainly due to the potential risk (esp with africans and bloat etc) and amount of people that swear against them, im pretty sure Brad and Frenchy will jump on with more info as im pretty sure it was one of them that had more info..

is that bloodworms or tubifex?

tubifex are the worms which are found in waters with high counts of faecal coliforms so i would have thought these are pretty bad but apparntly those ones you buy in the tins, (the freeze-dried stuff) is ok except it is really high in protein.

I feed my inaga bloodworms and they love it, i normally give them frozen brine shrimp too to mix up their diet

I do not have africans but have done considerable research in the last few weeks so i can dedicate my tank to them in the near future. information I have says that bloodworms should be feed once every few weeks. it also notes that tubifex worms are often responsible for bloating.

All my fish get bloodworms daily and sometimes more than once during the day, I dont have any African cichlids though. (American cichlids, tetras, danios, gouramis)

I've tried Frozen Mysis Shrimp, Frozen Brine Shrimp but its the bloodworms they love, many fish will jump out of the water to grab it out of my hand. Also feed tropical flakes of course, and special diets for the big guys.

That would be me Ryan :P

I found a response from a previous post...edit a bit....

I wouldn't recommend using Blood worms at all. Why???

They are found in the mud of stagnent pools & feed from the mud The mud contains chemicals which are toxic to some fishes. Especially African Cichlids. This is where the blood worms that you "buy" come from.

Also red mosquito larvae induce allergic reactions in about 30% of persons coming into contact with them(Liebers,1991).

I have seen one lfs owner get a nasty rash from bloodworms, I believe another lfs staff member {different store} gets really itchy after handling bloodworms & that is just from handling the plastic packaging. :-?

There are plenty of other foods on the market that are better for your African Cichlids. Frozen foods like mysis shrimp & cichlid dinner are better. Any of the name brand flakes, small pellets.... will be good too. eg;HBH Cichlid Flake Frenzy, contains Spirulina too.

I know people who use bloodworms with no dramas at all. There are plenty of other feeding options available, {IMO} why take the risk?

One final thing, is that alot of African Cichlids, eg;mbuna. Have small stomachs & long intestines. Blood worms aren't easily digestible, therefore can cause internal problems, especially if containing toxins.

Tell the LFS to shutup.
As you can see, there was a reason or two for the lfs to back up what they said to Gee Tee.

How are your cichlids going Gee Tee?

Well thanks for that everybody.

Frenchy you are a wealth of knowledge, thanks.

I'll use the block I have(keeping it away from the Yellas) very sparingly and then try a different frozen food.

I tried the cichlid meal once but the one I got was very messy so I will choose not to use that one again.

Im also against the using of bloodworms to feed your africans

I cant even touch them or a break out with rashes all over my arms and my eyes water

I also get a reaction just from the plastic bag they come in

The main problem with them is tiny hairs on the body of the bloodworms and they will iritate the insides of your fish

We feed our yellows, cichlid pellets, JBL Nova rift sticks, spirulina flakes as well as a cucumber, zucchini slices.

Supplemented by brine shrimp now and then as well as Seriously green tucker, that has small crustaceans and insect larvae not sure what kind of crustaceans or insect larvae , but the yellows are fine and have been fed that from young.

They breed very well and seem happy! ( The Male's are that's for sure) LOL :P:P
