Holding Female needs help

I have a problem with one of my malawi cichlids, noticed she was holding 4 day's ago, :D and today she is acting if there is a irritation in the water, she is shaking and swaying as if she is trying to swim but stays in one place, she does not do this all the time but often. It is as if she is having a Fishy fit, No body damage to her but from a few nips that the male has caused before breeding.

I have tested the water and found no fault to the water but from water hardness in the high 20's. The other fish in the same tank seems to be all OK, including other holding females. It is the first time she is holding as well and is about 9cm in size.

I have recently started to use AQUA Plus+ tap water conditioner, my other fish and tanks are all OK.

I do not want to loose this fish neither the fry she is gonna to have.

Please does anyone have any idea why she is behaving this way??

Chances are is that she is getting harrased. Pretty badly too be the looks of it. {Oops, re read lol.}

If she is struggling that much the only thing you can do is catch her & put her into a seperate tank.

9cm is big for first time if its a mbuna, what type of cichlids are they might help too.

In cases like electric yellows, the females are bitches towards each other.

Frenchy :D

Its a Cobalt blue cichlid, I removed the male from the tank after spawning to leave her in the tank with other fish that is smaller than her.

I think what I saw this morning is that it might be white spot developing in the tank as we noticed that other fish is starting to scrape them self.

How would I tread a holding female that is holding with white spot?? :-?

The thing is you still have to treat the tank. The fry will be carrying the disease too, & that would explain her irration too. Imagine having something in your mouth that is carrying a parasite.

As Ryan said the fry are pretty tough, but the main concern is you have to treat the disease. Do a gravel vac of the tank & follow the directions of the medicine bottle. You may want to treat the tank you put the male in too. Chances are he maybe be carrying whitespot too.

Many of the parasites proliferate in organic debris accumulated in the bottom of a tank or vat. Ciliates are easily transmitted from tank to tank by nets, hoses, or caretakers' wet hands. Symptoms typical of ciliates include skin and gill irritation displayed by flashing, rubbing, and rapid breathing.

Because the encysted stage ( Figure 2 ) is resistant to chemicals, a single treatment is not sufficient to treat "Ich". Repeating the selected treatment ( Table 1 ) every other day (at water temperatures 68--77°F) for three to five treatments will disrupt the life cycle and control the outbreak. Daily cleaning of the tank or vat helps to remove encysted forms from the environment

i got this info from this site, which may be handy for some to add to favourites...http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/FA041

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update on my holding cichlid, I did a white spot treatment and there was no changes to the holding female, shaking her head if she is under stress, fishy fit, kept a Eye on her over the last two weeks, no changes on the strange behavior and decided this morning I will remove the little fry.

And what I found was a little aragonite stone in her mouth with the fry, fry all free swimming and OK.

Has anyone had this happen before??
