Jasmine
My dogs found something on the beach. We were wondering what the heck it was, when we got near we found a dried up rather large puffer fish. I'd only seen the small ones in pet stores. This one must've been about twenty cms long. What sort of puffer would it be? Are they common? I've never seen one out and about before, let alone washed up on the beach.
Jasmine
Yeah they do! I was kinda just hoping that I hadn't seen something rare and left it there or something. Hehe. Would be nice to know exactly what they are tho! Which beach do you see them at?

davidb
everyone seems to just call them spiny pufferfish... I think they may have one at kelly tarltons. They are not common home aquarium material as they can expand to a size much larger than a soccer-ball!!!
Jasmine
I haven't been to Kelly Tarltons for years...it's so expensive! Are they salt water fish then?

Jasmine
LOL. Yeah, probably a blonde question. I've only seen brackish puffers. I went to go there last year and it was $30 a person. That, to me as a student, isn't cheap! Gives me one more reason to not want to go surfing

Jasmine
Oh that's cool. This one wasn't puffed up. It had a few spikes, but not as many as that one. Fascinating creatures really. I think they look cute.
Scuba Sam
I see puffer fish diving from time to time. I dive round Northland/Gt Barrier. They are really beautiful in the water, and do grow quite big. They are shy, and if approached, they do the big puff thing. One of my dive buddies liked to hold them like a rugby ball and pretend he was running in the back line. He has grown out of that now with a bit of peer pressure from his two female dive buddies. I caught one on a line about three weeks ago, and it seemed to be full of water. It swam away when released. I imagine they must be the same as the one you found as I have only seen one species round here. Cheers, Sam
Jasmine
I'd love to go scuba diving one day. How is it? I imagine it would be quite beautiful.
fishboi
One of my dive buddies liked to hold them like a rugby ball and pretend he was running in the back line   the ones with spikes are porcupinefish, the ones with out are pufferfish. i've seen porcupinefish been sold at HFF albany a few times. not sure if they have a puffer in kellyteltons but i know they have a cowfish in their poisons tank which looks similar to a puffer fish when not puffed.
