Caryl
If it has an ordinary lightbulb in it, swap for one of the short fluoros as they are cheaper to run and give off less heat.
K R Brown
if so would it cause such an heat rise? thanks for help what temp do the fish prefer to be at
davidb
why are you running 200 watts on a 50L tank?
Caryl
Depends on the fish but most say 25 - 27C but my tanks are set to about 22C - except in summer they overheat all the time here  Ordinary incandescent bulbs give off a lot of heat particularly in enclosed plastic lid systems (and black ones at that).
