betta peaty water

Does the peat alter the ph or water hardness? I have a problem with the tap waters ph being to low so i was told to use oyster shells in my filter, the downside to that was that it hardens the water. I am having to buy purified water from the supermarket which has a ph of around 7 to 7.2, but it is getting too expensive to do water changes. Does anyone have the "ideal" solution?

Yes peat softens the water and lowers the pH. Don't worry about the pH or hardness, the fish will be fine. If you want to offset it though put a stocking full of peat in your filter, it'll last a month (straight peat, not boiled)

edit: trust you ant! ah soo tired

edit2: Antwan says:
