Whiskas
I have a young platty that i bought a while back. When i got her she seemed very healthy. However she now seems to be VERY skinny and the other day sho bloated up like a lil balloon. Also she hasn't grown since i got her, unlike the other one i got at the same time. I put her in a trap thing to feed her up and to monitor her more closely, that seemed to work a lil (she gained a lil weight). When I first noticed her being skinny she also appeared to have a ?bend? in her body. She hasn't yet died and hasn't developed anything else. She doesn't seem to be getting any worse nor any better. I am confused, what could be going on? All the other fish are healthy and happy.
Southerrrngirrl
I had this problem with a Silvertip Tetra and was told it could be poor water quality or old age. I think it might have been the old age as I'd had the fish for quite some time, and who know how old it was when I got it. It was skinny too, but seemed to eat ok and swim around actively. It did die eventually.
me love fishy
Its possible this fish was born with something wrong with it and has only shown up as it got bigger. I had a neon tetra that has a "bend" in it once and it got more deformed as it got older and then died.
sharn
inbreeding and other genetic faults have sadly caused alot of defects like that in certain breeds of fish, it seems to be mainly livebearers who suffer from it and the guppies seem to be the worst. most breeders that get these fish will cull them though. it may be possible the spine bending is causing some internal problems? she doesnt have any sores on her body or loss of colour in patches does she?
