antwan
Just recently a filmy layer has formed on the surface of my planted tank as you can see below. I have no idea what it's from, I know it's not from poor water quality as I have been doing 85% water changes on the tank daily the last few days. purplecatfish
It could be algae, use a bit of filter wool or some white cloth and scoop some up. If it's green it's probably a summer algae bloom.
Caryl
If it's an oily film Ant it might be from your fish foods. A layer of paper towel or newsprint laid flat on the surface for an instant it will soak it up.
antwan
It's green, and bubbles, so it's photosynthesising, so it must be an algae. Should I just leave it?
antwan
I do have the curtains open during the day, but it has a white curtain thing that would prevent a fair bit, and the tank doesn't get direct sunlight either. Maybe I'm leaving the halide on too long?
Kermit
Thats the reason i'm running a sump as the over flow skims the top of the water removing the film and any other debris that gets caught in the filter wool in the sump. Great things.
Luke*
Yea that does the trick kermit but if you're injecting CO2 it defeats the purpose as it dissipates in to the atmosphere from the water movement. I had a film for ages in my planted tank too, just to upturn the siphon and suck a lot out but it kept coming back. Once I got my MH it actually fixed it in part because the plants were oxygenating and disturbing the surface just enough, the main thing is the plants outcompeting the algae though.
