RnB
cant find a great thread that i remember on here a while back had some figures on how many LPH a certain int diameter bulkhead fitting handles in practice vs theory..... I want to be able to drain about 6000LPH
jetskisteve
http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php If its your outlet on your overflow get a 50mm hole then your safe as !
RnB
I have a little giant that I want to run and the stated flow at 10ft head is 1900 us gal per hour, will go for the 50mm internal diameter.......

tee-em
wow appears pretty high flow rate for sump. just did some rough calcs on putting second small pump in sump for a cooling circuit back to display on my design.. your numbers look high. Let us know how it goes... theory is one thing lets see how it pans out.
RnB
1900 us gal its the main return pump from sump to the tank.... not that I take that 100% have always found pumps a little over stated.... I was concered that the fitting I was planning that returns water to the sump from the overflow was too small.... I am happy to have two returns of 50mm if needed, the plan is for barbe bottom and very high flow throught the main display back towards the skimmer.... thats 2L per second by my calcs... I will have tees on the return pump so I can vent to sump/frag tank as required.... going to clamp the pump this week to see how much its going to cost to run.... anyone in nz use the eductors or perductors sp? I would suggest bigger is better, but do keep in mind that 50mm will have a large impact on your plumbing costs. This is also a large amount of flow to have going through your sump, so make sure you can also handle it at that end. Linear length of your overflow would also have to be looked at. How big is the tank and sump?
RnB
I have many options for the sump as its under the house, i have a 500L acrylic that will become free soon and too 400L ish glass tanks, I need to be able to have the eductors/perductors sp? about 3-4 inches below the surface level, so need a large sump to handle when the return pump goes off line, I expect that about 100L will drainb to sump when this occurs, thats about 6inch deeper on the acrylic and its about 24 inches high...... overflow will be approx 680ml long, I expect that the water level will be at least an inch higher then the no flow state of the overflow... but will need to experiment to confirm this. I will be starting a thread soon but need to get hold of digital camera.....
Bubbles
500L acrylic that will become free soon and too 400L ish glass tanks Holy cow, that's almost my entire display  overflow will be approx 680ml long, I expect that the water level will be at least an inch higher then the no flow state of the overflow... but will need to experiment to confirm this. If it were me I'd try to get that 1inch overflow height down a bit. The lower this is the more 'efficient' your surface skimming will be. I have a 60cm overflow (15 x 30 x 15 box), pushing about 4000L through it. My overflow height is about 1cm. Theoretically this makes a difference, and comparing it to my old tank I'd say it's true. I will be starting a thread soon but need to get hold of digital camera..... Looking forward to it.
