Rockerpeller
nope nitrate is the last form of a cycle. its goes from ammonia > nitrite > nitrate.
Fishkeepa
not neccesarily. from my understanding there are three stages ammonia --> nitrite ---> nitrate If the benificial bacteria populations do not exist to convert ammonia there will be a build up but nitrite will not rise as it has not been converted into this, the same with nitrate. This happens when you dump a whole lot of fish in an uncycled tank. This can also happen if the benificial bacteria cannot prcess the amount of ammonia produced (overstocking). there will be a rise in ammonia but again the nitrite and nitrate will be the same as the bacteria can only process so much the rest remains as ammonia
