Bananalobster
Is it possible to use tiger barbs as a dither fish for africans? They look nicer than rainbow fish I think.. Just wondering if their are other options, my tanks ph is 7.6 temp is 24 degrees.
Caryl
Tiger barbs prefer acidic water. Why do you need dither fish in an African tank?
Bananalobster
I was reading a few of the posts on here and apparently it encourages the fish to come out a little more, mine hide sometimes when I have visitors and such. Just thought it might help.
Caryl
Africans tend to hide from sudden movements but will come out eventually. They will come out more if they feel secure in their surroundings.
SpidersWeb
I've seen tiger barbs used as african dithers before, and it worked really well. All my cichlids are american, but I've found the use of dither fish to be very beneficial, especially in my Firemouth tank, those guys are wussies :-? Bananalobster
Oh okay.. amreican cichlids like acidic PHs though right? Not sure if it applies to me or not, seeing as mine like alkaline. Pity though theyre so pretty and playfull.
Fishman
Use a fish that can outrun Africans, I use Rainbows which can easily outrun Africans and they like the high PH too.

Pity though theyre so pretty and playfull. I've never kept tiger barbs. I've seen them used as african dithers, as in I've visited african cichlid tanks and seen they had tiger barbs used as dithers. A tiger barb wont flinch at a 7.6 pH, maybe if you were up at around 8.2 then you'd worry. Most of my tanks are in the 7.2-7.6 range anyway. They're not expensive or rare so can't hurt to give it a go.
Bananalobster
Neat, thanks I might give it a go. Be nice to have a couple of open water fish to keep the tank nice and active.. Always wanted some tigerbarbs but I always had bettas in my tanks... Not a good mix I would say hehe.
