Discuss and Blue Rams

Hey Everbody

Its been a while since I posted my first about setting up my tank 1200 x 600 x 700mm

I have a community tank that has 1 clown loach/2 skunk loaches/1 red tail shark/ 2 Plecs/ 1 Rainbow/ 1 Electric Yellow/ 2 Krebs/8 Tiger Barbs and small group of Tetras. All room mates more or less get along.

My setup is reasonably well planted and well lit. The filter provides a medium current.

My questions are will discuss like this setup or is it too well lit or maybe they wont like the movement in the water or will they get along with the other guys. Also will they devour my plant life.

I have had conflicting reports about discuss being sensitive we fellows and then I have been told that they are hardier and not as hard to keep as some folk make out. Although I appreciate they need looking after, which I do for my existing fish. Regular water changes. Gravel vacuuming, good regular feeding in small quantities etc .

I purchased a couple of blue faced apisto's recently which was like introducing two mini chain saws into my tank. Will blue rams be equally adept at deforestation.

Anyone with advice will be much appreciated.

Regards

Tony

I would not put discus in with these fish. I would think the tiger barbs would upset the discus for a start. If the kribs start breeding they will guard a large section of the tank and attack anything coming near.

Another point - most of those fish like a similar pH (6.5 - 7.0) except the electric yellows which should be in an African set-up with a ph of 7.6 - 8.6

I will be interested to see what others think - especially those who actually have discus, which I don't. :D

I agree with Caryl,

The discus will not get along very well with breeding kribs and tiger barbs!!

I found my pair of white sailfin mollies on the floor outside my tank yesterday. The must have been harassed by the breeding kribs.:cry: Life goes on.

Ensure that you get the Bluerams from a good supplier, these nice fish seem to die for no reason.

All thye best

Blueram

If you move the Barbs, Redtail Shark (very bad with Discus), Electric Yellows and Kribs out Discus will be fine. With a tank this size you could happily keep about 6 Discus. Get them all at once as Discus develop a pecking order and more is better so no one gets picked on too much.

Blue Rams are nice fish but there is a very good reason why they die in community tanks. The Rams have a very strong breeding drive. They will pair-off and try to breed very easily. In most community tanks the breeding is usually unsuccessful. The male fish kills the female in response then in turn sulks and dies a week or two later. Most people find it difficult to keep Rams alive for more than six months.
