nicmack Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 Could you please tell me if it is necessary to but the little fish or snails which help to reduce algae in the tank, I have only had fish in the tank since Saturday and its away froom direct sunlight however I don't know if they are needed or not? Tsarmina Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 they are not a requirement, but it never hurts to have something that will eat the leftovers. i think the most popular would be Bristlenoses as they look cool and don't get too big, unlike plecos. as for snails, be wary of what type you get. most snails will quickly multiply and you will soon be back on here wondering how to get rid of them and quite a few are known to demolish plants. In there I have a BN catfish which does alot of cleaning of the glass, especially the back which is excellent as I struggle to get my arm down there to manually scrub it. I have also had good success with two clown & two skunk loaches, they eat all the left ova food off the bottom which stops it turning to nitrates as it decaes.
