Aqua
What would be good species of cichlids to start with, as I want to get out of the planted tank thing, and now I want to get into cichlids, but not sure of where to start.... :-? Matthew
Discus. Probably Malawi cichlids, they seem to be reasonably hardy. It comes down to what you like though. every cichlid has its merits and its annoying habits. Pick a fish and then do some research on it. Then if you are happy with what others say you need to do, and you think you can reasonably provide the care needed then go for it.
Aqua
hehe as much as I would love to, NOT discus, I'm a poor student again soon, so can't afford bloodworms

You can stay 'in the planted tank thing' and still some types of cichlid. Any of the relatively commonly available so called 'dwarf' species could be worth a try. I'm thinking 'Kribensis', Nannacara anomala, the various Rams, Aequidens curviceps or Aeq. marooni, even Angels... Lots of options. > ... and now I want to get into cichlids, but not sure of where > to start.... Fish like convicts, severums, blue acara, firemouths, jewels etc would be good places to start if you want a non-planted tank with some more agressive fish that don't get stupidly big... Andrew. Ira
I'd say severums would be a good beginner fish. Quite outgoing(For a fish), nice size, eat practically anything and pretty tough. They also aren't aggressive at all.
Aqua
outgoing? I'm thinking maybe a species tank? I'd love to have good specimens of one species... that way the only incompatibility I need to worry about is lover's quarrels
Matthew
thats where I favour the malawis. I remember going into wet pets in palmy, and they had this display of different malawis. absolutely stunning. the gravel was white, and there was a large rockwall built at the back of a four foot tank. Then the fish, stunning bright flourescent colours darting all over the place. wonderful.
