I have just bought a tropical Aqua One 620 tropical tank we left the wate to settle for a week before adding in 2 small angels, 2 silver sharks, 3 zebra dandios and one male fighter, I am looking at getting a group of 10 neons to finish the tank but will not do this for another week, is this enough time or should I wait longer before introducing new fish?

When shall I be looking at dong my wter changes ans how regularly? I have been told about buying algae eaters but am wondering how beneficial these may be? are there any other suggestions for compatiable fish for this tank? I am particularly after something with a bit of colour or that looks different the bigger zebra or maybe convicts??

Thanks

hay nic and welcome

now the Aqua One 620 is an 2 foot tank? [around 60cm] u're already goin to have a problem as silver sharks/bala sharks are over a foot when they reach adult size and with two combine is longer than ur tank :o . u may have to up grade in the future :D

dont put any convics or large cichlid in that tank as they would just eat or kill everything already in there. especially convics they're extremely aggressive.

10 neon would be a great idea :D maybe a few more danios as they're a schooling fish that like to be with 6+ dont have to be just zebras as well as all danios will school together.

water change as much as u want the more the better most discus keepers here even do around 80% water change everyday.

hope that helps enjoy the site. :bounce:

Please make contact with the Waikato Aquarium Club and get a member there to help you (several are regularly in here like Dave or HandS).

Your tank must cycle and you have already added too many fish, plus unsuitable ones. Take the sharks, at least, back to the shop and preferably the fighter as well. If the angels are small enough they might make it but I have concerns.

hi nicmack.

I'm not a member of the hamilton club, but would like to help out where I can. if you live in the hamilton east area, take a look at the shop called The Goldfish Bowl in heaphy terrace (their in the phone book), the owner is a really helpfull guy he's been running the store for over 20 years, and every fish keeper I know in hamilton raves about him.

during a cycle with fish in the tank you will need to do water changes of 30% or so every 2-3 days depending on your readings. you will need ammonia, nitrite and nitrate kits, the first two are particularly harmful and can accumulate in high levels during a cycle, they are pretty much the main reason for doing the water changes. of course doing the water changes during the cycle will slow it down but it will make your fish alot happier, the effects of ammonia and nitrite can be fatal. if someone from the club can give you a hunk of media that will help to seed your tank and will speed up the cycle. make sure you feed sparingly during this time so the fish arent producing massive amounts of waste, once a day should suffice.

Can someone please tell me how long I should have the light on the tank on for at the moment i am turingin it on around 7am and it dosen't go off until 7pm or so at night is this okay? is there a recommended time frame?

My second questions regards food...should i only be feeding once a day in the morning? I have some tropical flakes and i am feeding no more than a small pinch, not enough to cover a 10 cent piece really

And my plea for help, is ther anyone in the Hamilton area who may be willing to come over and show me how to do a water change and help me check that everything is in place and okay in the tank? thanks so much :hail:

I am sure there are several Hamiltonians happy to visit you.

Lights are for plants, not fish. Although fish like a night and day cycle they don't much care about the length of it. If you have plants you need about 12 hours per day. Get a timer so the lights come on automatically. Ours are set for around 10am to 10pm so we can enjoy them at night.

Feed as often as you like, as long as they eat it all. Small amounts often is better than larger amounts less frequently.
