  1. Is that just standard dirt you dug out of the garden or is it specially for fish tanks? Did it not make the water go muddy? Am wanting to set my tank up properly with plants so just getting ideas
  2. Have noticed this tank obn trademe. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fishbowls-tanks/auction-90929361.htm I 6mm glass thick enough for the lenght of the tank??
  3. Hey thanks guys and girls. Not really after anything inparticular, but was thinking about setting up a co2 system but found it hard to find sites that would ship to nz without the huige price tag. Are there any aussie sites that you know that ship to nz?
  4. You has sliced and diced an ar620T to fit more lighting into it? I have decided to sort out a planted tank but the lights that the tank comes with are, well to say the least crap for a planted tank. Have change the blubs in the fron from 13w each to 23 watts but still need more. I have a canister filter running at the mo so i could chop up the hood filter if i needed to. Any suggestions would be great
  5. Hey does anyone know of any good websites to buy stuff. I know of the petplanet website but is there any other ones?????
  6. A jar with a little water in it, some weed or plant. Tape the jar close. Wrap with newspaper then into a box and ship
  7. Hey i have two small ones at the moment. Keeped in a tank that i have put a couple of glass panes in to make a land area. They are pretty cool to watch eating but spend most of there day under drift would or hiding in the plants.
  8. A man. So what would you suggest for my next batch of fry if they spawn again?
  9. Could angel fry be sucked through fine mesh by bigger fish? I had 10 after changing my lighting and getting some plants to survive now i have none. They were in a mesh fry thingie in my community tank
  10. The tank is about 90 litres, it is an AR620T. Can't remeber the measurements of the top of my head. I just sorted the lighting out, because it came with shocking lights. It wouldnot allow anything to grow. So yeah plants are still on the thin side at the moment. It is green alage which i think is because of two much light, the tank is right beside a window that gets some sun. Can't move the tank so thought i would get some algae eaters. I must be doing something right with the tank, just after i changed the lights, and my plant actually started growing my angles spawned! So am now the proud owner of ten little angel fry!
  11. I have a couple of bristle noses that i thought would be good at eating the alage in my tank. They seem to eat all the other plants but not the alage. Is there a specfic type of alage eater that will be better then bristle noses in a community tank and a cichlid tank? Bristle noses are cool but want something that will do a good job too. Any help would be awesome
  12. So this is a really tall tank and at the moment my plants are doing not what they are meant to be doing unless that is dying in a gooey mess. I have contacted petplanet and they say that these are the lights that you can get for my fittings. 18w 7100K Day Bright White $13.00 18w 14000K Day Bright Pink $19.00 18w 7100K White/1200K Blue (for marine tanks) $13.00 18w Marine Blue 1200K (for marine tanks) $14.20 Can anyone suggest which would be the best for this tank Thank you

  14. Hey thanks for everyones help. I have read conflicting info about what temp they need to be keepde at. Some people say the need a heater around about 22C others say that they are fine with no heat. Can you tell me how your tanks are set up just so i can get some ideas for mine. I have sorted out t the tanks with a wet and dry area. Any help is greatly apreciated.

  16. Hey guys thanks for all the ideas. I have not done anything different with the tank so i will try water changes till it is gone. If that does not work i will try everything else that has been suggested. Thank you everyone
  17. My ciclid tank has just turned green over a couple of days. It does not look like algea but the water itself. Any ideas on whjy anyone. Help
  18. When i was setting up my tanks, since i am a student cost for heating is very important. Especially in lovely cold DUNEDIN. You can figure out how much power your tank uses per hour very easily. To figure it out calculate all of the power used on your tank in watts. For example if you have a 200w heater and a couple of 25w fluro's that is 250watts per hour. When you get your power bill you can find out how much it cost you for ONE unit of power. One unit of power on your power bill is equal to 1Kw (1000watts) of power. The power company charges you per hour. So just an example say you get charged $0.40 per 1kw per hour from your power company your fish tank which is using 250watts per hour will be costing you $0.10 per hour. This calculation is done on the belief that the devices that are running are running 24 hrs a day. I know it is kinda confusing but i hope it helps
  19. From what i have done, you may need to place polythene underneth the rocks then running into the pond so if any water runs into the rock area it will flow into the pond.
  20. Hey everyone, Please forgive me if i am doubling up on a thread but could not find anything about this topic. I have a Ar620T and am using the filter that i came with. It is slightly over stocked due to a crack in another tank of mine. It is a community tank also. What is everyones thoughts on the included filter or would it be better to use a canister filter or both??? I know it is not good having it over stoked but thought it was better then nothing. The water just never seems to get clear, even when it is not over stoked. If anyone can help please. Thanks
  21. Please ecuse me if this is in the wrong section but i would like to know somethings. i am looking to get a tank built, i have measurments in mind but am unsure about what thickness the glass should be and whether the tank will need support. The measurements i have decided on are 850mm long x 350mm wide x 350mm high. If anyone has suggestions about this tank feel free to comment and if you think you know what thickness glass i should get and whether i should have a support inthe middle. Cheers
  22. i am looking into getting a all in one tank and just can not decide, they both seem pretty similar but was just not to sure.
  23. They both make around about the same tanks but i was woundering if there is any difference between them. Thanks
  24. just thinking about cycling, does plant matter give off any ammonia. Could you cycle with plants?
