The Silver Dollars are not the fin nipper its the other big fella that i suspect is doing the damage.
Black Barred Myleus, Disk Tetra - Myleus schomburgkii
I suspect the big fellas been nibbling on some Discus tails and now i think i will have to get rid of him.
Sell him, whats it worth?
Give him to the National Aquarium?
Set up yet another tank?
About 3 months ago i purchased 5 Turquoise Discus all the same size from the same place. All are healthy and well except for "Johnny 5" who in 3 months hasn't grown at all. He gets food and is healthy he just hasn't grown.
Johnny's 1 through 4 are all 3 times there original size but Johnny 5 just refuses to grow. Weirdest thing ive ever seen, Is this normal or common.
Yep i withdrew it as soon as you identified that other fish (Myleus schomburgkii). Actually i'm quite glad i'm keeping him now he's quite a character.
He just sits behind a plant all day doing nothing at all minding his own business then once an hour he does a lap of the tank and parks his ass behind the plant again. To feed him i have to put food directly in front of him because he's to lazy to swim for it. At the moment i've named him Big Budda.
I was only going on what the chap that sold me the tank said they were.
However in trying to find out about them i have read that Pacu, Silver Dollars, and Pirana are all related.
Yep thats exactly it and from what i've seen its about fully grown at 5 inches so i no longer need to rehome it. The reason i didnt want to keep it in the first place was i thought they grew freaking huge.
Ok i recently purchased a 360 litre second hand tank as my original one sprung a leak. With the new tank i inherited 4 Pacu of which 2 are already quite large. However i'm a little worried about the size these buggers can grow to and I wonder if i should try to rehome them or is the tank big enough?
I was just reading on the net that this (Blackwater Extract) is a good product to add to a Discus Tank. Is this available in NZ or is there a similar product.
6 would be better from what i've read. As for what to have with them, anything community friendly, docile, and slow swimming. The only real problem i've encountered is that Discus are slow eaters and the other fish tend to get all the food.
Its all done and so far so good. I didnt move the gravel from the old tank as the new tank was in use up till i purchased it and i used the gravel from the new tank. Also at 360 litres i had to add a fare amount of fresh water.
