  1. tried this previously but it stopped my fluval 204 going! think i must have lost the babies coz i can't find them
  2. animates in wellington don't seem to have any sump systems, bu maybe i'll ask them. the tank is still being built so maybe i'll get a hole drilled. read somewhere that best to have the hole in the top of your tank so that the overflow works from there, reduces risk of flooding in event of power failure. what do you reckon? do you know anyone who could set it up for me if i paid them? am not too good at DIY, and with my career limited time.
  3. thanks guys. yep cats seem fine. bettas scars healing.
  4. thanks jason am getting a 7 foot tank by 2.5 wide by about 4 foot high, for large messy plecs who need good filtration. also want a lot of neon tetras. think a sump might be good. have read a little about it but would appreciate help. am not very DIY. how do i "pm" pies?
  5. hi there am keen on a sump for my new large tank still being made, but need help! am not very good on DIY, and am not sure of best size of sump tank. any pre-made sump tanks available? think i might need a 400L sump tank, which hopefully will fit under stand. any ideas? filters are very expensive when you have tanks this size.
  6. i was reading that the hole drilled in your tank for the overflow is better to be in the top of the tank as it means reduced risk of flooding. if there is a power outage, the pump will stop, so there won't be return of water into the main tank. then the water level in the main tank will fall below the level of the overflow, so no water will flow into the sump, and no flood! the sump will simply stop working, and the two tanks will keep their water levels constant until the power comes on again. check out this website: http://saltaquarium.about.com/gi/dynami ... rflow.html
  7. hi there am using some melafix to help a bettas scars heal. have got a peppermint plec and a josemalaianus in tank as well. just wondering if OK to use melafix with these guys. any thoughts?
  8. penejane the signs of stress i have seen in BNs are just lighter areas as opposed to all one colour. but one of my bristlenoses does this a lot but still seems healthy, so i'm not sure. havn't seen the scales go all rough though. they do have armoured plates (hence the family name loricaridae) so if you look close it does look rough anyway.
  9. great post richard! it's selena here! have also gotten hooked on betta lately, and am keen to get some female bettas. also looove catfish, just can't get enough. justin appears to have accepted it all, he is really very tolerant of me and my fish obsession. my only betta (beautiful red male) managed to get himself sucked onto the jebo filter intake. i then put him in the 3 foot catfish tank and he seemed ok. a couple days later appeared to have some scrapes, am still not sure whether from catfish or filter escapade. anyway, he's still active, am melafixing him, and have put him back in the jebo with filter wool over the intake. send us an e-mail some time!
  10. not sure where abouts in this article is the DIY section you are referring to. keen to see the betta apartments though! maybe a bit more of a hint as to where it is?
  11. hi again, sorry am posting lots of topics but just obsessed with bettas! just wondering which is best sized aquarium for bettas (bearing in mind no fin nippers, no other males etc). i know normally for most fish the bigger the better in terms of space, water quality, temperature kept constant etc. just that i remember reading somewhere that maybe a 10 gallon tank is about best, not sure why, maybe hey feel secure, less territory to defend? or maybe a large tank with lots of plants.
  12. yeah i want to get another male but no room! wish they all got on better (ha- ha!). then we could all get heaps of beautiful males in one tank. are the females coloured? they are hard to get hold of eh?
  13. hi there my beautfiul male red betta has gone crazy! in a good way i hope. had him (briefl) in a breeder trap coz i had to cover the filter intake in my 10gallon jebo where he got stuck - sucked on to the side - twice, and i hadn't managed to cover it yet. then today bought some filter wool, some melafix also (scrapes on body i think from filter escapade) then released him back into the jebo out of the trap now he's all fins held high, puffing his gills at an imaginary foe (only 2 small catfish in the 10 gallon) and playing dare i say it in the filter stream. loving it. is this normal? he sure looks happy, happier even than when i was in the 40 gallon as the only top-mid level fish.
  14. just wondering if occasionally plecs can be aggressive to other fish like bettas coming down to the bottom to eat their food. i reckon plecs are territorial. i have recently placed a betta in with 2 gibbies, gold nugget and joselimaianus in 40 gallon, and notice the betta sometimes goes down to the bottom to feed or explore. since then noticed a couple small are patches, like scales missing, on top of the betta near head end. didn't notice this in other tank, where he had managed to get himself stuck on the filter intake (but damage should have been to side of body rather than top if was from this.) do you reckon plecs or being stuck on the filter intake could have caused damage?
  15. thanks! will get melafix ASAP. still looks healthy, no fungus, have him in a plastic breeder trap in the quarantine tank until all areas healed in case it is the catfish.
  16. thanks! what about zebras - the males have long fins - guess the same as for male guppies...
  17. hi there just want to check if bettas are Ok with zebras and glowlight tetras and guppies?
  18. won't be able to get melafix till tomorrow should be OK? he's had these patches i think 2-3 days now. now i feel guilty, should have treated earlier, wasn't sure if they were new or old at the time.
  19. thanks for the reply. interesting that if it is him getting stuck on the filter intake, why does he have a new pieceof scale coming off? just noticed it today, has been in the catfish tank since last friday i think at least. currently have him in the jebo but in a breeder trap to avoid the filter intake.
  20. my bettta looks really healthy and active. however, couple of lighter areas on his dorsal side around the head, look like scars or missing scales. doesn't look like fungus or white spot. just now noticed a bit (very small) hanging off - ?loose scale. is in tank with catfish, slight current, no other top/mid level fish. catfish - gibbies, (one extra large), gold nugget, joseliamaianus. don't think he had these areas when he was in quarantine tank with small joselimaianus and peppermint plec. however i did not notice he got stuck on the filter intake - he got sucked on when he was wrapping his body around it (as they do!) (wide filter intake stem - is a jebo). maybe couple scales missing from that encounter, or maybe attacked by one of catfish? (territory- he does often go to the bottom of the tank too). was able to protect him from filter intake by putting nets etc around intake. not sure if i should put him back into the smaller quarantine tank in case it is large catfish. what do you reckon? should i treat with melafix? ?could be catfish?
  21. hi there someone suggested a sump/overflow system for my 7 foot tank im getting made. i have messy catfish that will get big. i don't quite understand how this works, where to get it from etc. can someone help me?
  22. yeah peter is awesome. i'm getting him to make me a 7 foot times 2.5 foot times 2.5 foot and stand. $2500.
  23. how do you get a sump system as you've suggested? can you exlain? thanks for all the replies.
  24. thanks hummingbird. will definitely do that then. am now hooked on betta in addition to catfish. my bettta looks really healthy and active. however, couple of lighter areas on his dorsal side around the head, look like scars or missing scales. doesn't look like fungus or white spot. what do you reckon?
