  1. Oh I see. So glad this excellent thread is not turning into a slanging match over a particular product Layton.
  2. Talking about cleaner shrimp? If so they are hermaphrodites, which means they are both sexes at once. (Not quite like clowns, which can change sex, but are not both sexes at the same time). Any two cleaner shrimp will mate and produce offspring. They do this on the night one moults. At that point it is impregnated by the other/s, and will then grow eggs, which can be seen in the photo of the one on Jolliollis hand, as the green mass under its abdomen. If you happen to shine a torch in the tank the night they are released, the whole tank is teeming with tiny creatures, and any nocturnal feeders are out in force. So if you have 2 shrimps, both will be carrying eggs much of the time, assuming they are moulting regularly.
  3. Don't think anyone bashed ipods, in fact this has been an incredibly useful, honest thread, with people pointing out the good points and bad points, of the various players, in their experience. What I picked up about ipods was they tend to be expensive, and you have to pay even more to buy various add ons that come as standard with some other players. But this is just the honest helpful advise that I was seeking to steer me in the right direction. Anyhow I have bought a Sandisk! , and thanks Tsarmina for setting this up for me . I'll add here that the Sandisk did not have EVERY feature I wanted, but the overall mix, plus price, was a good deal for the one I got on TM. Still waiting for it to arrive though .

    Unwell Damsel?

Get that temperature down asap. This whitespot thing is something that crops up every year at this time as temperatures go up. Even my yellow tang was flicking yesterday. An ugly but cheap as quick fix is get a small household fan from somewhere like the Warehouse, and an electric household timer. whole deal less than 50 bucks. Or to spend a little more get a pc style fan a big one though, which will be tidier. Time it to come on through the danger peroid, and point the fan, at a slight angle, right at the water surface, enough strength to cause decent surface agitation. Sooner the better.
  5. No survivors that I can identify of this species.
  6. Actually I was cleaning the toilet with one of those long handled brushes, and the end of the handle bumped the phone case and flipped it out right into the toilet. Real neatly, I wouldn't be able to do it again. And I bet some of you ladies didn't know a man could actually clean a toilet! . But yep, sometimes it does happen!

    Unwell Damsel?

Very innovative idea Antipodes, although I doubt you will get a tick from the water conservation board! Just wondered how effective it would be during summer, when tap water can get reasonably warm itself?
  8. Well 2 months later and I just caught them at it again! Strangely enough in exactly the same place too!
  9. Did you go ahead with this ctsniper86?
  10. UhHuh. The pieces of the puzzle are beginning to fit now  .
  11. I got a friend who had a trip to Egypt, he bought some oranges from a roadside stall. While he was standing around, he caught a glimpse of someone out the back injecting water into the oranges with a hypodermic syringe! They were sold by weight of course!
  12. Ha Ha good story about the wet ipod. One time I dropped my phone into a toilet . Anyway i grabbed it straight out (had to put my hand in ) and took the battery straight off cos I thought it might frazzle something. Completely dissasembled it and washed in fresh water, and dried it for a few hours in the sun it was a hot day, put it back together and worked fine for several more years . Anyway back to the player thanks for all the great advice that is exactly what I needed, all of it it's all useful info. I didn't know there was places you could try before you buy so that's what i'll do, go to one of those that way I'll get it right. And thanks all for sharing handy to know all that, now I've got all the info so I know what to look for .
  13. Hmmm.... Thanks! What a helpful bunch ! I see a nice looking Philips one, perhaps that would be a good buy? Looks to be about 100 bucks less than the same thing in ipod.
  14. i really know nothing about this but want to get one. so i've checked them out & they are everything from 30 bucks to 500  . course they come in a packet so unlike a stereo which you can try before you buy, with these, you can't. So what i want is primarily good sound quality, and 2 - 4 Gb. The ipods are the dearest, are you just paying for brand, or are they really better quality? Any other cheaper options that are still good quality? And the only other question, batteries, do I have to keep spending money on new ones or is there rechargable options?
  15. Careful if you buy pre-shelled ones. While the fish will love them, they are often sprayed with a solution high in phosphate to keep them looking fresh. Not great for water quality.
  16. When I went away last year I turned the lights down to 2 hours per day, coming on late afternoon. After 7 days there did not seem to be any harm done. Oscarboy if it's a marine tank, a few days overheating will do a lot more harm than a few days lack of light. To me when going away I don't like to think of them going hungry, but the primary 2 things would be temperature control, and flood prevention. What I have done in the past is have someone come in daily and they have a written checklist, and my phone number if anything is not right. For food, I put a bunch of cups next to the tank each with a measured quantity of pellets, and covered in glad wrap. The person just adds water to the cup and tips it in the tank, one per day.
  17. Some of us salties, me included, feed wild caught salt water shrimps to our fish from time to time, haven't heard any ill effects but that doesn't mean it's impossible. The type of water you are catching them in could harbour various parasites, especially if young fish larvae are in it. But the great majority of parasites are salt / brackish, or fresh, not both. One solution would be to keep the shrimps in a stronger seawater solution to eradicate any potential fresh water nasties. Keep it aerated, and if need be they can be fed fish food, don't overdo it though. But there will always be some risk.
  18. I think we might be able to do business TheConch, but I have no idea on price other than what Joe Blogg just said. Howsabout pm me what price would be acceptable for you, I just want one at this stage.
  19. Are they available locally & how much $$$?
  20. Thanks well I'll google both of those & learn some more. The issue in my aquarium is the fish are not surface feeders. If dry flake or pellet went in it is a fair bet a good portion of it will go down the overflow before being eaten. Is there some way it can be dampened before feeding? I was thinking of the food getting dropped into a floating ring or similar, to hold the food till it is waterlogged enough to sink and drop through the bottom and enter the water column. Is something like that incorporated into any of the feeders? The other issue is that giving one big feed a day at least ensures that the shy eaters get some, the fast eaters cannot go so fast that the slow eaters cannot get any. But just dribbling a bit in over a day could mean the less active fish don't get any. But I'll just have to find that out by experimenting i guess.
  21. Anybody know anything about these? I'd like to try something that can dribble a bit of food in over the course of the whole day rather than just one big feed like happens now. Just pellet or flake.
  22. How many "bogs" I got? Four. But why we talking about how many bogs I got? The pipe you seem to be concerned about is in Christchurch. I am in Auckland. Point is, I think we get the jist of what you are saying. You think the water could not have been contaminated. Others think it may have been, specially if it had a tree root in it. Hard to prove on way or another though. I would see this as a pointless argument, and an aside from the larger issue of the quality of Chch water in general.
  23. Not if everybody downstream of it flushed their toilet at the same time.
  24. A place called Washtech sells dosing pumps designed to run in their commercial dishwash machines to dose the detergent. These pumps have to be wired to a plug and bolted to something, as they are designed to be bolted inside a machine so there is a little set up hassle. They are also not adjustable dose, but can be controlled with a timer. I have been using one for several years & it has run fine they are a rugged little pump and not overly expensive. Washtech are in the phone book, ask for the service / parts department. The pump is called a Seco pump.
  25. Yes your tank looked great when I saw it so much more room than mine. And a nice rock scape. Did those sick frags I brought over make it?
