  1. ok thanks loads... you guys are very helpful I called hollywood fish farm today after not being able to find the more detailed insructions on using furan 2 on the API website... a very kind aldy gave me the exact dose I should use and how. Apparently, this it how I should do the treatment: Day 1, (e.g 4pm) - 1/4 tsp of furan 2 for 20L. Day 2, 4pm - another 1/4 tsp. Day 3, same time, 25% water change then another 1/4 tsp. Day 4, same time, another 1/4 tsp = last dose. Advised to do a 25%-50% water change after this and to repeat medication process after 1 week if fish are not any better. The lady said that presonally she would treat the whole 200L that the sick fish were in?? Any advice on that? Will be doing a 30% water change today, see if that helps a little and will start the medication next week. Thanks again guys, will keep updated
  2. Hello guys, Yes I have a small 20L that I could use. The guy there said that I should however treat the whole tank? Will just treat the barbs then. Do you think it is possible that the other fish would be contaminated though? Also, yes my mum said I should have just euthanzied the fish and just bought the same ones, but I thought (and the seller told me) that I should treat the whole tank incase the other fish were sick too. I really don't know what to do... I think I will move the barbs to the bare 20L. How should I set it up? Heater, filter?
  3. Hello everyone, I noticed a few days ago my gold barbs have red patches on their body. I have 3 barbs, 1 is going quite pale, not as healthy looking and it's fins are qoing a bit white/not much fins left, it has red gills. the other 2 are very lively but have very red patches under stomach and tail, etc. They were breeding yesterday though... very weird!?? I went to Hollywood fish farm again after the melafix treatment did not work, they said it was most likely an internal infection/bacteria and that I should use something stronger such as furan 2. But, they did say that if not used correctly this could also kill all my fish!!! Please help, does anyone have an idea of how I should do the treatment on my 200L? They said to go to the website and read the more detailed instructions than on the package, which I will definitely do, but would like some advice from experienced people who have used this treatment before... I have 13 neon tetra, 5 corys, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 zebra danio, and 3 platys. The guy said it would be best to treat the whole tank, the other fish have no symptoms yet but just in case they may be infected, the furan could do them good... or kill them...!! please help.
  4. Hello, Well the mum is refusing any other pets for her sister... but my cousin (the sister I am getting the betta for) doesn't have any pets for herself apart from the family cat... and all she does is read all day.. her mum nearly said yes for a little axolotl tank last year.. which gets me confused because axolotl need bigger tanks than betta???? But then theydidn't get one because it was "too expensive". So anyways since she will most likely say yes for the betta, because it is smaller and less ugly (she thought the axolotl was kinda ugly!), and if she however doesn't, which is highly unlikely, my mum said it would be fine for us to keep the tank and fish. My mums always wanted a little tank with a betta... So thanks guys, any pics of your tank and any other suggestions would be appreciated
  5. Ok. I guess I will most likely just get 2 females? I was hoping the neon would be able to hide from the angels, providing they have tall plants and a few hiding spots in the wood. I really, really hope they don't disturb the dwarf gourami, and not too doubt your experience, but I checked out a couple of vids with dwarf gourami/angels together... no problems but I'm not sure how long that lasted. I've also asked people who have tanks for sale on trademe that include angels and smaller tetra, they all said the angles are friendly and the tetra just don't get in their way. Check this out: It's not to go against your posts guys, but I'm just a little confused at how these guys manage to have angels/gouramis/tetras together in a tank only 40 gallon (150L) tank??? :dunno: Wish I could achieve this with mine...
  6. Hello, thanks for the advice Yes, I usually get sand for my fish and turtle tanks from the local landscaping store so that would be fine. They usually give me a couple of free large stones and pieces of driftwood too For the 28L nano tank you showed me, thanks very much. I have been watching that one for a while now and the seller sometimes has some 1 dollar reserve auctions up for sale, so I will keep checking that one. However it does seem a teeny bit too big, (not for me!) I would love that for a betta set up, but cousin's sis already has a 30L + cats and her mum refuses any other pets (she doesn't like having caged animals, although I try explain the fish we buy are mostly bred in tanks so are used to them. And other than having a heated pond or un-chlorinated pool outside, there isn't really any other way to keep tropical fish.) Anyways will look into the filter, I would usually place a large object such as driftwood/rock in front to break the current, but in a small tank like this, I'm not too sure. Probably place a large and hardy plant in front, but will try find a suitable filter. I think the one I have (spare) can be regulated to a suitable current... will check Thanks for the help.
  7. Hello guys, just updating- tank comes with heater, so that's good. No need to buy that but will need filter. I have a spare, mini aqua one filter I think that could be good for this tank... anyone have any advice?m Also will be using Silica sand for the base, maybe some daltons mix underneath but I'm afraid it might seep up through the sand/into the water and make the tank a huge mud puddle. Any body who has a betta set up please post your pics so we can see them/I can get some ideas! Thanks
  8. Hey everyone I was thinking about getting my cousin a betta tank for christmas. Her sister has fish and she likes them and since she has no pets I think a betta would be very cool. After a long time trying to find nano, LED or cube tanks, I was a bit disapointed at the lack of variety of small tanks and high prices around my area. I started browsing the auctions for bettas and came across a breeder in whangrei. He said he may have some small tanks I could look at and buy! :happy1: So, I am planning on getting something from a 9L-15L in capacity. No bigger, as my cousin's mum won't be too keen  I really want the little guy to be happy, and have a nice home, so I am going to have a low-flow filter, heater and a large amount of live plants. Do you guys have any ideas for the setup? As in what kinds of plants, what filter would be best, substrate? I was thinking about using daltons aquatic mix, which I use in my planted 200l, with some silica sand on top, some ambulia or cabomba and java moss. Filter brands? No clue. any help would be appreciated :bggrn:
  9. Thank you I was planning on getting a group of 5 and then selling them off as breeding pair once they pair up. But with all the new additions; now 13 neon tetra and the platys I'm not sure if tat is a good idea. I don't wan to have to move them to separate tanks as the only other tank I have is a 20L that I use for babies/sick fish. So, what do you think I should do? I think I should get a pair but my mum really wants to get more than 3 angels. Will a group of 5 annoy the other fish, especially the dwarf gourami? There is quite a large space at the front where the fish don't swim as much, only the neon tetra. Gourami comes to the top sometimes, but he likes the side plants. I just don't want them to all get annoyed at each other.
  10. have a look on trademe, there is a seller with dwarf gourami females for sale. I have a male and wanted a female too but HFF said that most stores don't supply those as they aren't as pretty as the males and people would buy them less???? Anyways this guy is in morrinsville, waikato. They are $18 each, about teh same price as males at HFF. Auction is closing in 7 mins but he relists them all the time. Not sure how he got these, but I really want one! Too far for me though, shipping would be unsafe Here is the link: http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 700115.htm hope it works
  11. hello everyone, after doing some more research and talking to specialists at hollywood fish farm, I decided to get some angels and have bought 1 (will be getting more with same breeder) that is due to pick up next week. I was just wnadring what would be the best group of angels for my tank e.g male/female or 1 male/2 females? Set up- 200l community tank info ph 6.5 ammonia/nitrites 0 temp between 25-26.5 degrees C 13 neons 3 platys 1 dwarf gourami 4 pepperd corys 3 gold barbs All the fish get along very well and are all healthy little swimmers. I wouldn't want to disturb and freak them out by adding a breedig pair of agressive angels. I heard the best thing to do would be to get a group of 5 angels mixed sexes and pair them off as they get older, selling the ones that aren't in pairs and/or keeping only 1 pair. This seems wierd to do as I could just get a pair??? The seller knows which ones are f/m and they are all about 5-7cm. any help would be appreciated P.S i would be planning to have baby angels.
  12. hello guys, still new here trying to figure out how it all works. I just wanted some advice on putting angelfish into my 200l. Will be traveling down to auckland and will pick up some fish at hollywood fish farm. I currently have 1 dwarf gourami, 10 neons, around 8 golden barbs, 5 corys, thinking about getting some khuli loaches and more tetras. :f77: After seeing a couple of vids of 200l community tanks with angels I was thinking about getting a couple for my planted 200l (55g). Do you guys think this would be ok and the fish would get along? I heard angels can get aggressive when breeding and could or will eat smaller tetras. :ske: But I saw many vids of tanks like mine with tetras and angels??? :fshi: any help would be appreciated thanks
