Mine is not really aggressive either she was a little bolshy at first when the jack dempsey was added but she's all good now bit of a croozer as well. I put up a pic today on the nz cichlid facebook page under posts. I do hope someone gets to breed them in Nz.

    Cubans.

I have one of these beautys. I have just confirmed she is a female (well I hope im right). I have only based this on the fact that recently I added a female Jack dempsey into my tank and in the last week my cuban has been continuously following her around with no noticed aggressive behavior towards the jack and the Cuban's whole underside has gone dark black and she also looks plumpish. After doing a bit of googling I came across a vid on youtube that showed a breeding pair and the females underside was completly black. I could be wrong but my instincts tell me im on the right track. Wish I could put some pics up but still havent figured that out yet lol (not computor savvy). I am now hoping I can find a male out there somewhere one day. I have read they are not all that hard to breed.
  6. Yeah I did look them up there the info was really just the basics which is a start. Was hoping I could get some extra info from someone who may have been there and done it.

    Banjo cats

Just wanted to know if anyone has ever tried breeding these guys.? I have had one in my smaller tank for months now and just love him my LFS have a few more available and I'm considering having a group of these guys and it would be a bonus if they were to breed would love to know how to go about this if someone out there has any experiences would love to hear them.
  8. Would it at all be possible to keep blind cave Tetras with a Redhead cichlid and a Cuban cichlid.?
  9. Every now and again I notice that my poor royal pleco has a damaged dorsal fin it always heals and now I have noticed my hoplo cat also has damage to his dorsal fin and is missing a whisker and the royal has damage again. I never see or notice aggression during the day so it has to be happening at night but for the life of me can't work out what fish is doing it. My tank is 600l with 1 female GBN, a royal pleco, 7 young tbars, 1 cuban cichlid , a hoplo and a redhead cichlid. The bristlenose never has any damage could it be her.? She seems harmless or maybe its one of the cichlids. Any one have any ideas how I can work out who it is.? Or how i can prevent it I'm pretty sure I have supplied enough territory for them. Any ideas much appreciated :-)
  10. Oh wow he's gorgeous. Thanks for everyone's feedback its all welcomed knowledge. If I do happen to get a pair I have a 150 litre ready and waiting for them. Stoked to hear I can keep a couple males together at the moment the 600litre is decked out with driftwood with some having java fern and anubias attached at the moment plenty of territory to be claimed but will have to rearrange things as they get older. I may just keep two males in there as my other two cichlids will also start taking up a bit of space as will the pleco . They are a redhead and a Cuban but they are pretty behaved but do think I might be over doing it with 4 cichlids and two plecos in this size tank.?
  11. Hi just wondering has anyone out there successfully kept a group of tbar cichlids together? I have just recently purchased 7 2.5-3cm juvies that I have put in my 600 litre hoping to get a pair out of them. So far they all kind of look male. Once they grow bigger I may not be able to keep them all because of tank space and two other CA cichlids and plecos I have in there also. If I don't get a pair I wanted to know whether I would get away with keeping two-four males together or will their aggression towards each other be to much? At the moment as young fish they are all good a few tussels here and there nothing major but I am expecting this to change at some stage. I owned a female in the past she was pretty staunch I bought her in a group of four she was the biggest and seem to slowly wipe the others out so part of me wonders if a group can actually be done. Any Thoughts and experiences much appreciated.
  12. Well as it happens I left the test tube sitting for a bit longer than the norm and yes looks like that was the problem I have a nitrate of 10ppm. Feel a bit silly as my readings have been zero for like a year lol oh well sh*t happens. My tap water is definitely still zero though :-)
  13. That's the thing I actually do follow the instructions shaking bottle number 2 and all maybe I should leave it for a few more minutes than 5 will try that tomorrow. I will even test my tap water again as that was reading the same.
  14. Its an Api test kit hasnt expired yet. Thought api was a good brand if not do you suggest one? Is a nitrate reading of 0ppm very bad? I thought anything under 40 was all good.
  15. Ive had the tank since last year running. My nitrates have pretty much read zero since the bacteria in my filter matured I bought a new filter beginning of march switching my media over from my old filter and its been running well since then. I wormed with kusuri as that's what I had on hand. I do weekly 20% water changes. I have only had these guys a week I got in touch with the people I bought them off they thought it might be change of diet their tank conditions looked ok.
  16. I bought a pair of hoplo catfish a week ago tomorrow. Since probably last Friday they have both had a white looking poo hanging from them the boy has it worse than the female. He has a pinkish white thing hanging from him. Their behaviour seems normal they are eating well my water parameters are 0ppm for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Ph 7.4. Since I have had them i have fed them well rinsed earthworms, shrimp pellets, brine shrimp, cichlid pellets when I fed my cichlids and peas they are in a big 600litre with 6 other fish. Am I right to be concerned or are they simply getting used of their new diet.? I wormed my tank the other day just to be sure. The female also has slight cloudy eyes any one have any ideas what might be the cause.?
  17. Thanks for your reply awhile back I decided against the hex tank and passed the angel on to a friend who had a better setup for it.
  18. I thought Angels schooled only when they are young until they paired off.I know there is one type that form close family groups and the other pair for life. I'm not looking to breed. I thought one on its own would be fine. I have a 120 litre standard tank but I don't think its tall enough. Can i ask why i cant keep one on its own?
  19. I'm looking at setting up a 90litre hexagonal tank planted with an angel fish and some ottocinclus cats. Can anyone tell me what is the best filter to use with this type of set up?
  20. Well it was only a couple of weeks ago I had a convict and a jack dempsey giving spawning an attempt and causing chaos in my tank. With the convicts now re homed there was a brief moment of peace in my tank until I noticed on the weekend another hook up attempt with what seems to be two females a t bar and a Nicaragua cichlid. The t bar has laid visible eggs under a slate and these two definite females are guarding ferociously. I just can't believe my luck with these crazy hook ups lol. My question is if I move my female tbar into a 200 litre with a male t bar is there a possibility they would get together and spawn or would they fight and try to kill each other.? As some cichlids must grow up together in order to pair off.
  21. Thanks for your advice. Thinking about it I will re home the two convicts I do like them but definitly not keen on the cross breeding their getting up to :-)
  22. All I can say is CRAP! After some observing I have noticed a missing female convict whom I found amongst tree roots and a rock in my tank and Jack appears to be guarding the parameter of this part of the tank. Im kinda guttered. If i split them up in the future to prevent this from happening again could the jd just randomly pair up with another of my females.?
  23. Sh*t I didn't think of that. I have two female convicts at 4cm and a young female Salvini I also have two female nicaragua cichlids they are also young at 8-10cm. Will investigate further lol :-) kinda hope that is not the case tho.
  24. Can anyone give me some advice on a suddenly menacing jack dempsey. I have had him since he was about 5cm hes now around 18cm about 2 years old. In the last week hes decided to chase my other fish around aggressively. They share a 600 litre tank all have hiding places so I was thinking I might be over stocked currently I have about 155cm once reached adult size of CA cichlids. I dont really want to re home him if I can help it but then again i hate seeing my fav fish the redhead cichlid hiding in the top corner of the tank. If anyone has some ideas that might help it would be much appreciated .
