  1. Isn't that because the gene pool of lions in zoos is quite small? So zoos have to trace lineage and make sure there isn't too much linebreeding?
  2. She's too fast to get a clear picture, and because her fins are clear it's very hard to focus on them. I took about 2 dozen pics of her last night to try and get a shot of her fins, but none of them turned out well enough to see
  3. Woke up this morning and they've fallen off...but her pelvic fin has a small hole where the spot was (although the red streaks have gone down) and her tail fin has a very small corner out of it where the spot was (it was right on the end of her tail). Surely that's not normal?
  4. We got a small pearl oranda last week from Redwood Aquatics in Christchurch. A few days ago I noticed a white spot appear on one of her tail fins, and one of her pelvic fins. They are definitely larger today than they were the first day I spotted them, although they never looked like "grains of salt" commonly associated with Ick. Today, her pelvic fin is starting to show red streaks. Any idea on whether this is Ick? Or am I looking at a bacterial infection? Upon some googling, I'm wondering if I should also be testing the hardiness of my water, because if the water is too soft, it can open my fish up to lower immunity against bacterial infections and the like. Tried to get a picture of her, but she won't keep still enough for a good image. She doesn't seem to be in any distress, no glancing off anything or clamped fins.
  5. Thanks y'all! Fish are settling into their new tank nicely.
  6. Have you introduced any new fish to that tank recently? How big is it and what are your water parameters like?
  7. Awesome- will do! Thanks for the tip.
  8. Thanks for the welcome! The original tank is only about 15L (and currently at the office), and I've just gotten a 62L- I could put the sponges in the original filter and pop it into the new one. Do you think I'd need to wait long for the bacteria to establish through the rest of the newer filter? The filter that's come with the tank is only good for up to 55L (looking to get a new one shortly). Do you think it'd be too hard on the fish if I filled it up and swapped the sponges over?
  9. After the earthquakes, I gave up having tanks in bouncy houses...but then someone at my office decided to get a tank that was far too small for anything to survive, and after a few of her fish died, she decided she didn't want it anymore. I'm the proud mom to a wee goldfish and a sole white cloud minnow. Have purchased a bigger tank and am waiting for it to cycle before introducing the dastardly duo to their new home. It's exciting to have a tank again! My husband is already telling me I'm only allowed one for now...we'll see how long that lasts
  10. Sorry to bump a topic that's a few months old, but I'm in Christchurch and would love to get a few leopard fish for my tank. I've asked the only two folks on TradeMe if they'd be willing to ship, but they both politely declined. Where you able to find any in the South Island at all?
