  1. Thanks aqadvisor reckons 15 of them is 104% so I might start with 15 juvies and take out the extra males if need be as bananalobster suggested.
  2. I have a 154 x 30 x 30 cm tank, I was planning on keeping electric yellows. I understand that the tank is a bit smaller than the recommended 55gallon but because of the length which is longer than a standard 55 I guess that it should be ok. How many electric yellows would you recommend?
  3. Still looking for some in Hamilton, new tanks going up tomorrow and I have some rocks I really want to use.
  4. Hi I am looking for some "egg crate" and was wondering where I might be able to find some in Hamilton?
  5. I have a spare 60 x 40 x 30cm tank that is water tight but has a rather large chip in the bottom corner and would only feel safe with it having a few inches of water, so I've decided to go for a golden bell frog or 2. I would love it to be as natural looking as possible but am unsure of what's emersed plants would be suitable. Say ideas? Also would I be better off with one or two frogs? Thanks heaps :bggrn:
  6. Has anyone actually used Daltons No1 with Loaches? I just started washing it and the grain size is quite large, it's not sharp to touch but some bits are a little rough.
  7. So... ended up gettin Daltons no1 washed sand. The guys at Bunnings reckoned it wasnt as sharp and rough as the cement mix sand. Will this sand work?
  8. I am looking for a natural looking sand that won't be to sharp for my kuhli's. There were some bags at bunnings (can't remember the name  ) $9.95 for 20L. It was outside with the gardening stuff not with the concrete sand, so I'm guessing play sand?? Is this safe for kuhli's?
  9. Sorry if I have posted this already my internet disconnected and I don't know if the post submitted. I think my tank may be going through a mini cycle after a gave the filter media a little squeeze last week. Now out of nowhere I have had 4 fish disappear and about half are swimming spastic occasionally as if they had ammonia or nitrate poisoning. Usually I would go to the pet shop and have it tested if something was wrong but the odd swimming has only started tonight and because they are quite sensitive fishes I am worried I could lose them all overnight.
  10. Thanks for all great info everyone! :gopo: The pH in my tanks are pretty stable, usually 6.8 , 7 at the highest. So I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing....
  11. My neons have been spawning as well! :dnc1: if there are other fish in the tank even the parents they will get eaten, so yes you should probably remove the adults if you have somewhere to keep them. The water will need to be soft and acidic for the eggs to be viable. Also the eggs and fry are light sensitive so they will need the lights off, i think until they are free swimming (someone please correct me if they need the light off longer). Oh and if one female hasn't yet dropped her eggs, maybe put her and a male in a breeding net until she drops them and then put them back with the rest of the adults.
  12. I talked to somebody from the water department a few months ago, they also emailed me through a full report of the water, however the report was already a couple months old so I'm thinking they only test every so often and it has only been since then that the pH has changed. I was just curious as to how this may affect the hardness as I have soft water fish. I am still managing to keep the tank at around 6.8 it doesn't bother me too much.
  13. So the kh has gone from 0 to 3? Will this affect my fish in anyway?
  14. Has anybody else in Hamilton noticed a rise in the pH of the tap water in the last week? I was also wondering how this would affect the gH? Is there someone in Hamilton with a gH and kh test kit that could help me out?
  15. There is a lady on trademe demitryfish in Morrinsville, she sells silica sand at a good price. I think it's only $1 a kg, size of your choice eg 5kg, 10kg, 25kg etc and she will ship as well.

    Hello!

Yay I thought I was the only person who appreciated the beauty of teeny tiny fish! I have thought about getting some brigittae but my partner is a bit iffy on getting any more tanks

    Hello!

Hi my name is Gema.. I'm kind of a newbie to fishkeeping but I LOVE IT! I currently have 2 planted tanks and am working on setting up a 3rd. So far I have a 60 lt with 10 Boraras maculatus and 8 Neon tetras. And a 20 lt with a blue veiltail Betta named Kabluee. And I'm setting up an 80 lt which the neons will move into to make way for more Boraras and some Scarlet badis. Looking forward to meeting some fellow animal enthusiasts :bggrn:
