  1. All in all HFF is pretty good , but they are doing a roaring trade in Alternhera Rubra, I got caught out by the spiel ' high lights and CO2 will help"

They might as well be selling Lettuces as under water novelties

No amount of CO2 and highlighting will keep this plant alive immersed for very long.

We have had this plant growing well for ages, sure it grows slow, but we dont have it under high light and CO2. Excellent plant to grow algae on too :-P

  2. :smot: They're going green. :an!gry The reds and blues are still on and going, but the greens are brighter.

Look at getting a manual dimmer for your leds. The greens are far too brigh on those strips, and so are the blues. You can get pretty close to a 'white' by using a manual dimmer.

  3. Id probably make a small stand for it... eg. a small wooden box (maybe without closed in sides) and a board on top where there will be a hole cut in for the tank to slide into. Or go to a car paint supply shop and pick up an airgun stand. You get them in different shapes and sizes... maybe repco or supercheap auto will even have them

  4. To my surprise, the glosso is spreading horizontally not growing vertically like I expected. If it keeps growing like this then I won't have to top it and will fill the tank in around a week. Very pleased with the growth so far!

Why did you think it was going to grow vertically?? I was under the impression it only grew along the bottom... But its looking good. My glosso seems to grow well under all my my lights which im pleased about... even my leds :)

  5. I really wanted electric blues but could never find any so settle with the blue rams. I have had gold rams in the past too. I just want them all :P Love these fish!

Danval, I do really like yours, mine are lacking the black stripe by the eyes. Whenever i see others with the black, i think they look so much better than mine.

  6. Nice fish :) My one is called Grizzly... just because when my brother and i got our 1st tank it came with a Hoplo, we were looking for a name. A bunch of the accessories came in a shoebox branded 'Grizzly', so ever since thats what all our hoplos have been called :)

They have all been different in their own way, one had nice orange side fins, like sterbai corys, another had a barbel nipped off which then grew back forked which was quite comical, they all came to the surface to feed, very fun friendly fish.

They dont seem to be agressive towards other bottom dwellers from what ive noticed.

How can you tell the difference between male and female?

  7. Thanks guys, yea im pretty pleased with how its been going... considering the lack of investment and time i put into it.

DennisP: That is something i found in one of the ponds on the farm. It grew well for a while, but now there are just a couple of small shoots of it popping up out of the gravel... dont think its too fond of the warm water.

F15hguy: it is funny how much the plats grew, even the blue platys in the second photo are now huge. All the guppys i have came from 1 female... wish they would stop breeding :P but atleast they are colourful and swim all over the tank. Pleasant to watch.

  8. Hey Everyone,

Im Nick and I've been browsing here a while but never been able to register due to the email restrictions. Eventually figured out i can use my university email!

I've keept fish for a few years, but my tank lay dormant and neglected outside for a few years.

In March i decided id set it up again, only to find the silicone was peeling away. Completely dismantled the tank and resealed it and removed the annoying center brace across the top.

    Aqua one cf1200 filter, 2x 30w t8 tubes, daylight + powerglo

Fish: assortment of live bearers, 3x sterbai corys, hoplo catfish, 2x gold bristlenoses or similar, 2 ottocinclus, 4x threadfin rainbows, 2x blue rams.

Substrate is fine black grit. I dont fertilize the tank, altho there is the odd JBL ball in the gravel.

Just after setting it up (beginning March):

  9. After setting my tank up again after it was lying dormant for a few years, my jager heater took it to over 30deg before i noticed. Thankfully only a pair of unhappy guppys were in the tank at the time. I replaced it thinking it was useless, but now im using it in another tank and its working fine... something might have got stuck or something? 1st time i had a heater play up on me.
