  1. I had the same problem after my husband overfed - This WAS my tank before I did a 4 day blackout. I did large water changes before and afterwards and ended up beautifully clear again with no chemicals - and haven't had a problem since! I know you said you aren't overfeeding, and it does sound like too much light. A blackout will kill the algae spores but wont solve the contributing issue, so you will still need to work out what it is and fix that too. Best of Luck!
  2. Thanks Blueether, I will make an effort to come to a meeting soon! Yay
  3. Another idea once you have a venue http://www.totalentertainment.co.nz They do Mechanical Bull, DJ's, Bouncy Boxing, Sumo, and stuff like that. BRILLIANT FUN..!!! :happy1:
  4. Ok, sorry bout that - I only a tropical newbie so a LOT to learn still..!!! but try Googling Aquarium Calculator and it should come up with different options, there may be much better ones than I used, and someone else on here may know of a really good one. Best of luck.!
  5. Hi Krisy, sounds exciting, would love an update on how things are going for you now! I wanted to do the same, and I believe there is Waikato Aquarium Society that meets each month, but I have been trying to find their details, it is proving difficult and can only find old stuff. Does anyone know if they are still running, and who to contact? If not maybe we should start our own coffee group, swap meet or something...!! :cofn:
  6. The one I have used is http://www.aqadvisor.com Works with fresh or marine (seperate pages). Gives indication of stocking levels for your tank and filter and which fish work together, minimum recommended levels etc. Do need to scroll down after inputting your info in though - almost missed this the first time!
  7. Not sure if I'm correct, still a newbie! But I believe Pimafix is more for Fungus type problems, Melafix wont hurt but probably wont help a lot? I've had fungal probs and don't seem to have a lot of joy with Pimafix either - lost em all anyway :cry1:
  8. I leave mine in the store brought cube packet. Pop 1 out, cut in half or slice of whatever is needed and put leftover back in original cube. It hasnt changed shape, just gotten smaller so fits back in there well Then I just put it into clear plastic bag back in freezer.
  9. Thanks for that Rockgurl, all advice is VERY gladly accepted!!! Will definately try that next time. Didn't know if custom printing would work with sticky side/printed side (found out now, thanks heaps ) I'm fairly new to this fishkeeping thing, but LOTS of reserch on the web has helped. And the fact that I'm a bit of a handyman and willing to try almost anything. I also believe in helping others as much as possible so enjoy sharing small tips and bright ideas.
  10. Wow, that must have been a nightmare to apply! Air bubbles are not to be desired... another littlel tip is to use a needle to release those nasties, then work air toward the hole. The dishwash solution is what the pro's use to apply signwriting, it doesn't destroy the backing glue and enables you to position multiple times if neccesary (keep wetting it). They also use a special squeegie, but card works just as well. Thought about using cooking oil but after reading MANY other forums feedback, the downfall of oil seemed to be removal of crunchy type residue once it dried out or had been on a long time 1-2yrs+. Beauty of vinyl is it's easy to remove with hairdryer, and comes in hundreds of different colour choices.
  11. After troubles with store brought backings, eg. dull taped on look, lifting Seaview product after a little over one month, I was a little disheartened but didn't want to paint either... I came up with the idea of using Signwriters Vinyl. Cost $25 for 1.5 metres. If you choose this option, lift backing paper instore to ensure colour is on sticky side too, some vinyl's are white backed (colour won't be on sticky side which is what finally shows through the glass). Apply wet with water/dishwash solution, start in middle of tank and work out bubbles to the edges with credit card or similar. Easy! Is similar idea to the Seaview but actually sticks to glass and won't lift if water drips down back of tank or heater lifts big bubbles like mine did. It should last many years, or until change of mind, most vinyls are 5-10year rated for outdoor & vehicle use. I wanted a blue background and chose the slightly more expensive metellic look. It changes colours depending on angle viewed at and available light reflections, pictures below (YES it IS the same tank). Please excuse third one, couldn't focus close without flash. I'm extremely happy with the final product! What do you think?
  12. mmmm, I did try that but it vibrated against the wall, same as inside the cupboard. I have an Eheim 400 and loving the FOAM..!
  13. Ok, a many folded flannel didn't work, so soft foam underneath the Air Pump has worked a treat :happy1: The sort of foam thats used for seats or matress toppers. I used 40mm thick, but half that should be fine too. I wanted to share this because it worked so well for me. I would be interested to hear what others have come up with, and any idea's that might have worked for others.
  14. Thanks everyone for wonderful welcome. I am now thinking about joining Waikato Aquarium Society, thanks Zeebee!
  15. What a great site! I'm looking forward to talking to other enthusiasts here and learning more. Family had tropicals growing up and last year we were given a fishbowl and 2x goldfish, 1 died so gave other away. Brought 20L and Guppies, wasn't enough though.... Brought 130L and now running both tanks and LOVING it.
