    empress out cold

has anyone else had a fish knock itself out?
  2. i learned last night that a fish can be knocked out. i was turning out lights as i was about to watch a movie and the tv went black as i turned the last light off. the fish got frightened and crashed into the tank and one red empress managed to jump 100mm out of the water through the triangle cut out of the brace in the corner (mostly blocked by fx5 outlet) and fall 1600 to the tiled floor below, i quickly picked it up and put it back in the tank, unfortunately it sank and was gonna become a snack for everyone else so i scooped it out and put it in a 100mm cube and put a air hose in it. 5 min later and still upside down and only a little bit of movement so i gave up waiting and went to start the movie. came back another 5 mins later to check on him and he had escaped that tank too, luckily it was on the main tank and he made it in there. all 8 of my empress are swimming around in the tank happily this morning. morale of the story is dont give up on a sunkin fish as it may be out cold
  3. i agree i have had 8 red empress from fry and 1 male is starting to colour up now
  4. i kept both but then when they started breeding they took up way too much space, so i got rid of them all apart from 1 pink and 1 black. the black 1 grew faster and ruled the tank but has been overtaken and took a recent beating and demotion so i wont put his photo up yet

  7. Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi
  8. all the haps look the same. none of them are the boss or more colourfull but they are only 3-4 inches. if there is a male would it not have colored up better and be a bit bigger than the females
  9. i have 5 brown haps and 4 butterfly peacocks along with others in my 6 footer and they are starting to try and breed. my question is can they cross? i have had females of each holding but no idea who the daddy is. there is definitely a male peacock and unsure about the haps (how do u sex them?)
  10. cheers godlyevil. got it 3rd time round.

  13. will try but dont no how to upload photos.
  14. i didnt plan for it when i built the stand so cant fit one in. otherwise i would have.
  15. so i will be filtering 2200l/h and if i ran them normally it would be considerably less?
  16. i have recently built my first big tank and have plumbed 2 canister filters through the bottom of the tank. my filters are rated 1000 and 1200 l/hr with max head height of 1.4 m. my question is since the pressure in the bottom of the tank is aprox 6psi feeding into the filters will this increase the flow through the filters as the height to pump up is effectively 0? if it does increase flow is there any way i can find out how much?
  17. tank is 1900 600 600. ryan u say the fronts wont get much food with them. judging by what mine eat that would be by choice? just out of interest what do u think this is worth? has 2 canister filters plumbed through the bottom and a tap to fill/empty. so only needs circulation pump and heater going into the tank. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=486006039 sorry last 2 photos of the listing. dont know how to add photos
  18. thanks. what would a red coloured option be to mix up the colours? i would prefer the females not to be dull
  19. just set up my tank and want to stock it with all young africans. i want to have geraffe or livingstoni, demasoni, electric yellows, julis, and bumble bees and maybe fronts. any recomendations on numbers and compatibility?
  20. sorry to bring up bracing again as i know u are probly sick of hearing bout it but u should screw the ply braces off at certain centres for it to be propperly effective. from each corner u should come in 50mm then another 50mm in then another 50mm in and at 150mm centres from that around the edge of the brace no closer than 20mm from the edge. more screws in the wrong place doesnt help. the building inspecters can be very strict about this when building houses. look forward to seeing completed pics
  21. i am a builder and built my stand out of 18mm mdf and 25mm chipboard flooring for the base to sit on. (holds 900ltr tank fine) if u no of any houses being built in your area u should try asking the builder there as he might give u the materials for free as the lengths u require will be in the rubbish pile as they are often too small for us and i would make it for a box of beer if i was asked cos its that quick and easy
