  1. What sort of "concrete" are you using? you'll need more of a plastering mix. Try a mortar with maybe some extra cement, plastercising additive or bonding agent which is a bit like PVA. Id just try some extra cement first.

  2. Anyone bringing in NLS cichlid formula at the moment. I normally get some off Trademe or Hollywood worst case. If not what other quality feed are we feeding Mbuna/ Haps at the moment? Cheers.

  3. What are you feeding the fish? I had problems with green water when I was feeding foods that were high in phosphates.

And the fish you have asked for an ID on is probably a hybrid zebra, however it doesn't appear to be coloured up properly and its not a full photo so maybe take another photo of the full fish when it is fully coloured up for another opinion.

At this time of year id say it would be the food making the water green.

  4. Im been in to tramping and hunting since i was a young falla- hunting more so as i got older and wanted the challenge. Hunt mostly Sika in the Kaimaniwas and Kawekas. Sometimes hunt with a video camera only. Although not so often these days with a young family.

  5. How do you guys prevent root rot? Is it not an issue as long as there's enough dissolved oxygen/aeration?

I havnt had any problem with root rot yet. My plants are in the clay ball media as well if that makes a difference.

  6. I have a mini indoor setup been running for the last couple of years. Will post picks later. Have cut back on the herbs now though as ive turned the lights off. Only have some lucky bamboo and some chives.

IM just running off a 30l Aqua one tank but bypass the filter and extend the pump head up to the grow bed then return pipes back through the filter. Really simple and really cheap after a bit of mucking around.

Its not the best setup but i was keen to do something as cheap as possible, reducing water changes and getting something in return from a tank. Wasn't interested in powering a whole garden. If i was to plant more herbs out i would have to get the lights going again.

  7. Wouldn't that be the equivalent of rinsing your filter media in tap water?

Yeah I guess. It works for me though and I don't get any mini cycles or the like. I guess it just a brief time and only 20L (in my case) of tap water before the tank water is running through the filter again.

  8. I got a new Sun Sun filter and filled it with water, turned it on and it just rattles - no water flow at all. Pumping the button caused a few bubbles to come out of the outlet pipe but that's it. The manual says to pump the button (not sure how often or how long for) and "apply electricity" and I assume it should just go. :dno:

I Struggle to prime mine due to extra length of piping I have so I use the garden hose to prime it. Once I have given it a clean and hooked all the hoses back up I just poke the hose up one of my outlets until it comes out one of the inlets then turn it the pump on.

  9. i agree with hamster, i run my tank with aragonite substrate and 2 canisters with coral rock in the basket and to be honest my ph in the tank is the same as what comes out of my tap and the kh is the same so in think the limestone/coral/aragonite do buffer to a small degree but it seems to me that they do little to buffer water that is already around 7.6-7.8 ph.

How have you found your homemade buffer hamster, i see heaps of conflicting info? is your ph/kh the same from each water change or have u had any fluctuations am interested to know as the expensive pre made buffers are basically the same as what you are using plus a few more bits and bobs. Even with the aragonite etc.. in my tank i find my ph and kh start to drop a bit by the time i am due a wc ( i dont use any buffers at the moment).

I change 20- 25% (100L) per week and my recipe is 1 teaspoon of each baking soda, epsom salts and rock salt per 20L. So every week i add 5 teaspoons with my water change. I have 20L marks on my tank glass so i know how much im changing out. That keeps me on a rock solid Kh and Gh of 11. I dont often test the Ph as it always the same. I used to check every water change now its more like every 6 weeks but always good.

The only time i got small fluctuations was initially when i was fine tuning my recipe. I worked it out in a 10L bucket of my tap water adding a measure of each until i had the hardness where i wanted it. Then i had to fine tune it once it was in the tank with the limestone etc. I'd imagine fluctuation would happen if you were not replacing what you were taking out or just not being accurate enough. My tank is not planted, has no drift wood but has a heap of limestone which could also help.

  10. Limestone will only be good for your water perams. Do you research on Cichlid Forums on your specific varieties but Africans are pretty hardy as far as PH levels go, the main thing is to keep them constant. I use a solution of Epsom salts, baking soda and rock salt to keep my PH a constant 8 and KH and Gh at 11.
