  1. UPDATE- :happy2: :happy1: :happy2: I filled the tank yesterday and it is holding the water great. Hopefully I will be able set up the tank over the next few weeks. (My DIY stand also held great :happy2: . Now I just need to build myself a light hood.) Thanks everyone for their advice.
  2. Thanks for that, Did the business last long?
  3. Does anyone know what happened to this setup?
  4. OK, I will have a look at that, When I went a few weeks ago they only had large stones and no sand. Maybe they ran out of stock?
  5. Do you know any good places I could get it from? That aren't contaminated with farm chemical runoff.
  6. yeah, I went there but there was only large gravel around 20mm, I was hoping to get some smaller stuff.
  7. Does anyone know if there are any good places to collect some small gravel for an aquarium in Palmerston north or around that area? Or alternatively around dannevirke, or if there are any good rivers on the way up from wellington? Hopefully I might be able to get some when i go up there tomorrow. Cheers
  8. I will keep you guys updated. I don't know when I will get a chance to test it though being this close to Xmas. I am also in the middle of building a stand for this tank which is coming along slowly. Its good that your tank has held together, proving it can be done and will hold over a long period of time. Have you re-siliconed it in that time?
  9. UPDATE- I have emailed the tank constructor(who is a professional glazier) He said the tank has no problems except for turtles due to the tank blocking most UV rays, which they need for their shells. And that the laminated glass is stronger then float glass with another benefit that if it breaks t holds together. I guess he knows his stuff considering he is a glazier by trade.
  10. Did it hold? I have heard from different sources about the strength of laminate glass hence the original question. some sources have even claimed it maybe stronger?
  11. I don't think there siliconed, I Don't know what it is, from that website he say laminate glass is a 8 compared to float glass being a 10 in strength. Not much difference. with him also mentioning at this height glass would only need to be 6 to 8 mm. :dunno:
  12. sorry I don't know as the wife paid for it and organized it as a gift.
  13. yeah, that's just a bad spot, it's much better overall. I will make that the back.
  14. Here are some pictures- I have double checked the glass and it is in fact 10mm.
  15. I brought it of a tank manufacturer on trademe. Do you think it will hold? The silicone work etc are all very clean and nice so I think he must have some experience.
  16. I recently got a new tank, measuring 1600mm long by 400mm wide and 550mm high, which I haven't yet filled. I have been reading online about glass types and found my tank to be made out off 10mm laminated glass. It has euro bracing as well as a center brace. The problem is I have found some sites saying the glass is only as strong as one of the panes in the laminate where as others saying the glass as strong as normal float glass, Does anyone know which is the case, Is the glass going to hold the water? Thanks in advance.
  17. I don't think it should be a problem at the hutt river due to the council paying someone to dredge the river and place the rocks in the harbour. They also hold an annual event where they load up your trailers with rocks and gravel for free, sadly this is in February which is a bit too long to wait. I guess the worst they could do is give me a warning and tell me to put back the gravel.
  18. Sorry for the long delay in replying, I will have to keep an eye out for some of the rounded stuff. Does anyone have any experience with using gravel from the hutt river? I might be able to pop over and get some of the finer gravel there.
  19. I was just worried about the non-polished edges, Is this a problem?
  20. Does anyone know if i can use 'pea metal' gravel for an aquarium substrate? From what i under stand its only crushed river stones. So i don't think it will raise the pH or add any harsh minerals etc. Thanks
