  1. I'm still not 100% on those fish being Johannii, the heavy vertical barring just doesn't seem to add up to me, yes I know they are sold as johannii here.. I need to wait until I am home and go through the konnings book and see if there are any variants that match the fish you have put pics up of. Biggest issue with melanchromis is there are so similar that there are so many hybrids floating around and being NZ we get the dregs.

Totally agree ryan - I'm still not 100% either. There are plenty of photos on reputable websites with vertical barred johannis, but I still consider my adult male to be the benchmark. He is a great example. Having no experience with raising these fish, I'm wondering if the vertical barring is something that fades over time. He certainly hasn't finished colouring up at 6mths.

  2. I currently have 500w (a 300w & 200w) heating my 540L tank (probably more like 500L of water). I need a heater for my new 200L so was thinking about snaking the 200w out of my main tank. Will the 300w handle the job on it's own? The tank is in our lounge which is always reasonably warm as it's our main living space. Room temp would be 20-23 most days & nights.

  3. I have a canister filter which is rated at 1200L/hr with no media in it and at tank level. I have three trays of media and the top of the filter is 87cm below the top of the tank where the outlet enters. My outlet hose is also approx 2m long from the canny to the spray bar. Based on this, does anyone know roughly how much preformance is lost? If I was to lift the cannister up 30cm so it's approx 50cm below the top of tank, how much more flow am I likely to get? And the same goes for shortening the outlet distance - would that also help if I dropped it to say a metre?

  4. Fishy-fish - I am going to politely request that you edit your post to take out the p word in your first sentence.

As preparations for a court case are now in progress, discussing what may or may not have happened on a public forum is not what should be happening.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I'm not interested in the court case, or at least discussing it in a forum, I'm interested in the sweet fish tank and want to give props to the guy who set it up. Mark "the fish man" did an amazing job and it's a real shame that this tank and in particular, the fish, got caught up in all this.

Hey, it's not everyday our hobby is front page news! That's worth discussing here don't you think?

PS I see you already did the editing for me. Interestingly enough, if you search for that word it appears in 9 other posts and if you search for the the present tense of the word, it appears in 852 times! tut tut tut

  5. Yes I know who Mark is. However, if he does not want it known in the article it would be wrong for myself or anyone else for that matter placing it on this forum. His only involvement in this case is as a person contracted to create and maintain the aquarium.

I wasn't after his full name, date of birth or anything. Just wondered if he was known in the hobby. He got a pretty sweet job with that client!

Dotcom: "I want you to set up the best aquarium in NZ"

    Mark: "It'll cost you thousands..."

Dotcom: "Make it hundreds of thousands and we have a deal"

Mark: " :o !drool: " I accept on one condition

    Dotcom: "What's that?"

    Mark: "name suppression"

    Dotcom: "?"

Mark: "I don't want people knowing how freak'n amazing I am at setting up and maintaining kick a$$ tanks..."

Dotcom: "anonymity... My kind of guy! You're hired!"

  6. Male-Stuartgranti Marleri

    Female-???????????????????????????????????

    Where you get them from?

From Lake Malawi of course  :slfg:

Seriously though, I bought a complete set up about 8-9mths ago that came with 40 adult africans. When I got them, the male hadn't coloured up. The previous owner had listed them as sunshine peacocks which is most typically maleri but also used as a junk draw catagory given to all sorts of aulonocara.

I wondered if the females were jacobfreybergi?

  7. I need to buy new filter media for my aqua one 2250UV-C canister filter which I will be using on a 200L tank holding africans. Which media would you recommend? I'm looking at bulk buying (up to 10kg) so that I have spare media to rotate out my 3 other cannys. I heard bio balls are best in a wet/dry or trickle sumps? I would normally just pull the trigger on ceramic noodles, but the sintered glass has got me interested. It's more expensive, so is it better? Advice please! :dunno:

  8. how do you manage ??

The wifey is in bed early most nights so I get stuck into it then. Typical man pottering around in his garage at night time :slfg:

These photos were taken around midnight last night!

Seriously though, fishkeeping is a great hobby for a fam and especially young kids. The two oldest help me feed the fish each day and when it's time to strip a female, it's a famiy affair! All the kids crowd round to see and then count the fry. Plus, a bit of extra cash from breeding helps

  9. I have the Aqua One 2250-UVC which is very similiar to the 2700

    AquaOne2250UVC.jpg

and it's OK, but the FX5 is in a class of its own. If you can get away with less filters (maybe explain what you're doing set up wise)

then I would go the FX5. With this many filters and cost outlay maybe you should look into sumps? A good sump would blow any canister out of the water.

  10. am pretty pleased at how its turned out but gotta get a better camera just using a point and shoot and am hopeless at tuning the setting on it

I increase the ISO setting on my point and shoot which helped heaps. Give it a go.
