Hi! I recently got a few bettas with which I would love to try to breed and the male escaped and is now hanging around with the females, I can't tell them apart yet, this is where you come in:) Please excuse the deplorable condition of them as their tank has a wee ich infestation which I'm treating now, I would have waited till they were better but only had a decent camera today... Also, though I understand that this may be difficult I would like your advice as to which female I should try to put to the male first? Thanks!!! no. 1 no. 2 no.3 no.4 no.5

thanks for the help all!

Hey! I recently got some crypts and stargrass for my 15G tank and was wondering what sort of light I should put in for a decent price? Its just sand bottom so I'm not expecting huge growth, will look into getting feeder tabs in the future . Thanks, Sam

Awesome, thanks!

After looking at google images I think I agree... I'll do some more research for when I upgrade them but would what male:female ratio would work nicely in a 54L with 6 zebra danios and 4 pygmy corys? And are they good on flake food and bloodworm's or shall I get some supplementary foods? Thanks very much, Sam

Got it: http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z46 ... ami027.jpg It was sold as a blue, since I got it home its gone a bit darker but I'm putting that down to the stress of moving... Also, could anyone sex it for me? -its dorsal fin is pointed indicating a male... Please excuse the horrible looking airstone, thats getting a good clean this weekend:)

Hey all! Went for a trip out to the 'nearest' fish shop yesterday and came home with 2 new pygmy corys to join my other two, a dwarf blue gourami (we think) and three kuhli loaches for my flatmates tank. -the very knowledgeable and friendly man who helped us and I were of the opinion that it was probably what we thought it was but i thought as I don't have that much experience in the gourami department I'd get some conformation from you guys... I'll be upgrading them into the 54l next week after a little bit of designing. Does anyone know of an attractive lowmaintenance plant that i can plant in silica sand? -I already have frilled Java fern and Java moss of driftwood and would live to diversify a wee bit... One of the kuhli loaches is a neon and seems to be very good at burying just its body and leaving its tail and head poking up out of the sand. If someone can coach me through uploading pictures I'll give you something to work with regarding the identification of the gourami:)? Cheers, Sam

Yeah, got up this morning and they were all schooling round together:) Thanks for your help

Hey, I got a few pygmy corys a few days ago and am wondering if I can put them in with my Zebra Danios straight away or keep them separate as they are still juveniles. They are in a medium planted tank with quite a few hiding places and soft substrate. On a slightly sadder note, I was wondering if anyone had any that they no longer wanted/were willing to sell (1-3). -I found the least active cory floating this morning so am now down to 2 and would really like to get the numbers up but don't live anywhere near any fish shops... Cheers, Sam

Thanks diver, I'll keep that in mind:)
-
Yeah, I think I'll keep it in mind for the next tank instead of this one:)

Awesome, we'll go and see if we can't hunt down the local branch, thanks! And I think we're going to look into getting some females down the track when we can provide for them properly.
-
Wow, they're quite gorgeous! I'm guessing they have a pricetag to match though:) Yeah, We would both much prefer to get a red/common whiptail I think but I'm finding it difficult to hunt a breeder down...
-
I assume you are referring to bettas? I dunno, I love my wee zebra danios, one got picked out of the tank the other night by a cat who isn't as stupid as she appears and its perfectly fine now:) Speaking of though, got any idea where I can get some nice ones in Wellington? -So often the pet shop ones look so bedraggled...
-
Will do, thanks stephanie:)!

Hey again guys, Joe, thanks for all the great suggestions, I'll definitely keep the Apistogramma macmasteri in mind for the next tank! Still sold on the school of neon tetras and am now tossing it up between betta and whiptail catfish, any ideas/opinions/helpful hints for or against either of them? Would we be able to add some female bettas to the tank (if we went the male betta route) later on or would that be asking for trouble? My research has suggested that while a male betta and a whiptail could probably fit in the tank together well enough, there could be problems, I'm assuming the aggression would likely come from the betta? Thanks, Sam

Is there any real difference in the requirements for red whiptails vs. 'normal' or 'common' whiptails does anyone know?
-
Hey, just showed him the suggestions and its a toss up between the male Betta and the whiptail cat. We both love the look of the whiptail but I imagine it'd be rather expensive? Any breeders of either of those out there? Will post a wanted ad when the tanks cleaned up and ready to go:) Thanks!

Wow! thanks everybody for such awesomely quick replies:)! I'll put all these ideas to him tomorrow and see which combo he prefers. As to the light, I'll pass that on also and see if i cant persuade him to spend his money on something else:) Thanks again! Sam

Hey everybody! I'm in need of some stocking ideas for a 60L tank, as its in a flat mates room he's taken ownership of it (i clean it, he buys the fish) which I think is just a wonderful idea:) He wants a wee school of neon tetra and I've been researching around but the only recommended fish seem to be other tetras. Any ideas? Its going to be lightly-averagely planted. 60cm long, 30cm wide and high. He loved the idea of a pair of angels but further research suggested that they'd be too cramped in that space, but something along those lines... He also wants to put a black light on it, would that harm the fish at all do you think? Cheers, Sam

its not very thick, but theres quite a bit of it. The danios showed more interest in the Windelov but maybe..? I'll get onto finding some proper lighting in the next few weeks, where could I source the ones you mentioned Sam? Thanks
-
Wonderful:) Thank you! I wouldn't have the faintest, that was the answer from the wonderful mr. technical-man He estimated that the bulb was either 75 or 100w

Hey, I have just started up my wee 38L tank with a few Zebra Danios. ammonia = 0 nitrite around 1.6 nitrate =10 I am lighting it with a typical desk light with a 100w bulb (I think ). Yesterday I noticed a white fluffy growth on the side of one of the pieces of driftwood. Its the side closest to the light. Any one has any idea as to what it is? I was just going to scrape it off? Cheers, Sam

Hey pink fish, I'm not sure exactly what type of aquaone tank it is, the only measurements i found on the box were 26w, 30h (cm). I'm a very patient person:), the journey is half the fun after all. Thanks very much for your advice, it parallels most of the rest of my research so far:) I'll post some pics as soon as my last plant arrives and the tank is looking presentable:) Thanks, Sam
