  1. bolivian / buttefly ram but partner has eyes on blue peacock and electric yellow. Maybe one day..............
  2. Its hard to be patient for a impatient person like me, but Ive shown some restraint in that i havent really gone mental and thrown a huge amount of poor little fishies into my tank only to have them die. SInce i last put a message on I have removed the pearl Gorami and this is what we have in the approzx 80 L tank, 1 dwarf gorami 1 bolivian ram 6 3cm harelquin rasboras 1 pleco and eddie the batik eel (also known as a tyre track eel i think) Nitrites HAVE spiked up to over 1!! and i have opted to cut down on the feeding, step up the vacuming and water changes to 2 days if not daily and observe the fishies, They are not showing any signs of distress such as gasping at the surface etc etc, (actually, i think they are kinda happy because i took out the "boss" of the tank the pearl gorami). I feel mean though, so the next tank i set up im gonna be more carefull with, poor fishies
  3. Tank 80L Cycled with "Cycle" added for one week week later 10 rasboras added week later ram and 2 gorami........ Amonia (cant spell) been zero Week ago reading 0.1 today 0.3 Nitrazorb added as precationary measure Contemplating taking bigger gorami and rasboras into other tank to lighten the pooping load Im sure some of you can admit to being a impatient fishy person........ hur hur Water changes were weekly been bumped up to every three days since monday.. although have discovered muck somehow managed to find way UNDER heavy sunken ship...... which i missed vacuming over until just the other day.. smacks for me  Ta
  4. heh heh, my tank is quite discombobulating, its 4 weeks old, and has had fish in it for about 3 weeks... and all my levels were low if not non existant and my fishies are happy and feeding well, (well i only got a nitrite test kit last week) but my tester kit is telling me my level is just over 0.3 (yet i have not noticed any change in fishy behaviour).... i got a nitrazorb to stick in last week also, and it confuses me that i can have levels rising slightly when i have nitrazorb in....... isnt it suppose to reduce the levels somewhat? I have had my eel on hold at the store for weeks now and I want to take him home......... would i get away with taking a handful of fish out of my tank, giving it a thorough vacume to be able to have my preeeeeetty boy come home... whats your opinion
  5. orange Flash Cacatuoides Double Red Cacatuoides Haplochromis Labidochromis Caeruleus Electric Blue Dempsey Double Red Agassizii (Excuse the mixture of latin and other names, just using what info they had.....) Cool fish....... has anyone got any or know someone/some shop that does?
  6. I was in Hollywood fish farm in mt roskil and they have what them but they must be a dwarf strain or something because they said they would only get to like 17cm or something... i know a few other strains of Geophagus can be wrongly labelled (ha labelled).......
  7. currently doing 30% change weekly, with the odd one between, recently set up tank (one month old this weekend) and am monitoring the nitrite levels religiously, we have a few fish in there and I am guessing its going through the last stage of cycling (?) as levels are around 0.1 - 0.3...... its not that much of a hassle, but ive got only one big and one liiitle tank, not zillions like some of you fanatics So maybe soon i my nitrites will be down to zero and I wont have to be so paranoid. Im using nitrazorb though, when i put it in my nitrites were 0.1 and i am sure the pink colouration is a fraction more towards 0.3 then it was.... i wonder if my nitrazorb is working or whether my levels would be mental without it.
  8. Hi there, has anyone kept these fish as i am after some info. IE, what size they get to etc etc, hints tips etc. My partner wants a couple of these little dudes (cause they look kinda like snapper  ) and me being the person with the most fishy knowledge will be the one looking after them  so id like to know what im getting in for before i commit.
  9. Yeah, it would be nice to have a west auckland club but i dont have the knowledge to really start one myself.........
  10. Hi There, as a new fishy person i am interested in joining a club possibly to share my enthusiasm and meet people interested in this awesome hobby/lifestyle (Classed as lifestyle cause if something takes us a certain % of your home then its part of your lifestyle).. anyway could anyone fill me in to whether there is a WEST auckland club or if not which would be the closest ... and what actually happens at these meetings... (obviously we dont take our fishy friends along....) Much appreciated.
  11. How big is your eel? What diet are you keeping him on? any advise?
  12. i would of done no more than 1/3........... yeah i do intend to change it frequently.... like once a week maybe...... or once every 10 days depending
  13. Like fish!! heh heh, no im looking at another tank to poss do cichlids. Small cichlids like my butterfly ram the south american ones......... so there goes more dollars.
  14. The tank seems pretty empty with what fish are in there!! The rasboras are about 2cm, the ram 3cm, the goramis both about 5cm and the pleco 7cm so i would have to say that you really have to look for a fish in the tank!!
  15. yeah it could possibly be the vacume that "offended" the Gorami, it a rather wide tubular vacume and i have seen ones that resemble a normal "floor" vacumes shape, wide but flatter.... and being a bit of a novice i aint exactly fluent in the water changing process......... anyway, ill try to take it easy and get a new vacume maybe.
  16. Tank is a aqua one 680 (or was it a 620...) anyway its around 80L, i am going to take water sample into hollywood fish farm where the eel is and they will check it for me.... im pretty sure im in the clear but rather safe than sorry.. killing a pricey eel wouldnt go down to well
  17. Heh heh, me again, hope im not annoying you people with my constant stream of questions. Any way, I have a eel on hold at the shop and am wondering whether my tank is ready enough for him. The tank is 3 weeks old and we cycled it for a week with "Cycle" then added 10 rasboras...... my that stage we had a soft clear fuzzy growth on the walls of the tank, and added a butterfly ram and a pleco..... then a dwarf gorami and a pearl gorami. They all have been in there a week and have been eating, swimming and behaving normally. I havent observed any "stress" signals in the fish (oh, apart from when i did my water change and scared the gorami a bit...) I intend to test my levels before he goes in, and my PH has been stable on neutral most the time apart from the odd deviation by 0.2 upwards when i have added something new to the tank. Would you agree that my tank will be ok for this eel? I know there will be a few people who would of said i should of kept my tank with only a few fish for a while, and i guess i have been impatient yet careful monitoring my fish for signs of distress....... what would you say
  18. yeah im keen on gorami, they are really little characters. I reacon the water change stressed my fish.... so would it be a good idea in future to remove him from the tank while changing water... my other pearl gorami wasnt at all phased by the change, so it just might be this little bloke.
  19. bit of a late answer but hey someone might still be interested. Yeah i have one of these guys, they are neat little fish, intelligent and our one has staked out a territory in his tank which he patrols most the day but has never shown any agression to our smaller or larger fish. He shows a fair bit of curiousity to the other fish though. Cute little dude.
  20. just a question regaring whether a dwarf gorami is a sensitive fish. Last nite i did our first water change after introducing this fish and he was darting about the tank then once the change was complete and ph levels etc tested, he began to list over to one side, almost laying on his side on the bottom of the tank, then would dart across the tank and anytime a fish came within a few centimetres he would bolt across the tank away from them , i thought he was going to die so turned the lights off and covered the tank hoping that he would not die, and this morning he was fine!! Are goramis prone to stress from water changes or is there another explanation to this weird behaviour. We have a pearl gorami, some harlequins, a butterfly ram and a pleco in the tank and none of them have had disputes
  21. well, we brought 10 harlequin rasboras when we cycled our tank, and i thought it wouldnt matter if eddie the eel (or eddette, i dont know how to sex a eel) ate a few, but now im kinda fond of the little blighters......... i could put eddie in the 35 L tank my its self....... but she/he is already about 15-20cm and i have no idea on growth rate...... im also a fan on gorami, (ok ok, ive only been a fish owner for a few weeks but now im ADDICTED ) but i would imagine a 35 L would be too small for a couple of them am i right?
  22. yeah if anyone gets a chance to see one they sure are cute.. in a weird creepy way we picked ours up for just over $50, if your a eel person and want something different ... they are cool
  23. Have a look here, good example of my dude, im surprised, they apparently can get to 90cm!! http://www.aquabase.org/picture.php3?ac ... ew&id=2276
  24. ha, one of my blonder moment  (grams, what the heck was i thinking ), we have a 80L tank but have devoted that to community fish (and a eel heh heh) and the other tank ive got is about 35L so it looks like ill have to wait until I devote another tank to them and thus a whole room to my fishy friends. Talking about my 35L tank, i got practically given it (hey, i couldnt turn a bargan down) and now am trying to decide what i could put in it. Any ideas?
  25. Hey the Mastacembelus armatus is very similar if not the same!! i THINK YOU FOUND HIM!! Yay!! Has anyone kept one of these guys?
